We recently had a bad experience at the hotel Manglar and fled for our sanity to Las Tortugas. The owner took us on a personal tour of several architecturally unique apartments and I can’t say enough nice things about him or the way we were treated. We ended up in a light house type building with a private pool, with great views above the canopy and our own personal howlers and butterflies at thirty feet up on the deck. We loved it there, thank you Luis, and the staff were super friendly. We shall return.

Quiet and beautiful, this place was such a great experience. We met the owner and they treated us like family. The food was great and the views were epic. I highly recommend experiencing this hotel if you want a great place to surf and a relaxing place to escape the city.

We had a very good time at this "modest" resort. We felt so close to nature and thoroughly enjoyed the area. We used the receptionist's safe since our room doors did not lock. Very relaxing and we learned a lot from the staff about conservation and the wildlife. Recommend it yet admit we were in the Bungalow unit (newer and nicer than the others)

My third visit and excellent as always in spite of the terrible storm that knocked out power, water and communication for 4 days. Louis kept it together for guests. Amazing man and tortugas activist! You go Louis!

We spent a week in Las Tortugas Playa Grande as part of a 2 week trip to Costa Rica. This was our beach/surf part -- and it proved to be everything we hoped for. The owner (Louis) made us very welcome on arrival, and was keen to share his very extensive and practical knowledge of the area, including how to get the best out of the waves. We opted to hire surf boards from Louis as he had a good selection at a very competitive rate, plus we could try different boards: important for us as the waves here are very different from what we are used to in the UK. No problem carrying the boards on the car. We made trips out to Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas, but it was Playa Grande that came out trumps. What immediately impressed us was the pristine cleanliness of the beach and how friendly everyone was: in and out of the waves.

We stayed in the bungalow, which is a self contained unit in the hotel grounds close to all the facilities, but positioned such that you really feel you have it entirely to yourself. Short walk straight on to the beach opposite the main surf break. Ideal for checking the surf conditions and watching the sun go down at the end of the day: waves too large/too crowded? simply walk north or south along the beach where it gets progressively smaller and less crowded.

The unit is clean and crisp, and keeps very cool day and night, which is needed as it can get very hot and humid. It was cleaned regularly late morning, and generally while we were out, so we always returned to a smart, sand-free home at the end of each day. There's a large, quiet patio area out front where we ate all our meals: something we really appreciated after our one and only(!) trip into Tamarindo.

We visited with our 14yr old son, who was very happy setting himself up in the main room/kitchen (choice of 2 beds), whilst we used the separate bedroom (1 large double). If there were more people sleeping in the main room it would be good to have curtains that could be drawn around each of the beds for more privacy.

We probably did more self catering than most, which challenged the cooking facilities, but they were adequate. Food supplies (+ pretty much anything you can think of) are readily available from the excellent, open-all-hours Willmart store a short drive away on the road in. When we didn't cook ourselves we ate at the hotel.

Whilst we got the occasional bite, the mosquitoes didn't really figure and we ate outside on the patio morning and evenings in t-shirts and shorts, although we were well covered in high strength Deet repellent. Don't talk too soon I hear you say....

Board storage was a bit of a problem. Following Louis' advice we brought them into bungalow when not in use, which is is a bit of a pain as it takes up living space and they need a good wash off to avoid bringing sand in - but we were happy to live with that if the alternative is an unsightly safe box outside.

One important thing to be aware of are the rip currents. They're really strong and whilst they don't go out very far, it really is a surfer's beach and not safe for swimming. The rips do drop off however as you move along the beach, and we found it safe to play in the water about 150m up from the hotel by the 'palms', so long you stay within your depth.

Funds permitting, we'll be back
