We chose this hotel as it was highly rated in the immediate area. Our shuttle driver was at the airport when we arrived. We had just left an all inclusive where employees were not usually tipped, and we were not prepared for this hotel's employees and the excursion guides to be working primarily for tips. Be sure to budget for this. Our stay was prepaid through Expedia.

When we checked in we were asked to sign an agreement about the policies of the hotel that covered the amount of food we would eat, that we would use our cell phones only in our room and that music would not be played loudly. A copy of my passport was also requested. This was the first time I've ever been asked to sign a document like this and we've stayed at many high end hotels.

Our room was very nice. Ranking our favorite parts... the bathroom (1) the very large closet (2) and our balcony with a nice view of the ocean (3). The bed was comfortable, and we had soft music that was played in the general hotel, in our room with a touch of a button.

Caeser, Javier, and the other servers were excellent, and the food was remarkable! The first night bar service seemed slow, and we discovered that our chef was also tending bar. So, that increased our tolerance level.

Enjoyed happy hour immensely as this was an opportunity to chat with other guests and learn about their daily adventures.

We did a Hidden Beach day tour with Sergio and Jorge that was delightful! They took us to the mangroves for photos, Egg beach, and another beach close to the Ritz Carlton where we snorkeled and had a terrific lunch prepared by Jorge.

On the resort property we saw iguanas, birds and a daily visit from howler monkeys -- including a family with a baby.

It took us 40 minutes to walk one way to downtown, and we made the round trip walk a few times for exercise. Playa del Coco is experiencing rapid growth and the people are overwhelmed with rapidly rising costs of living. I do believe that the Buena Onda is an excellent choice when staying at Playa del Coco.

Thank you for your detailed review.

We are known for our intimate ambiance and personalized service. We ask guests to keep their cell phone use in public areas to a minimum for two reasons:

1. In order to not disrupt other guests enjoying their vacation
2. For folks to unplug from their digital devices for just a bit and relax

We let guests know this policy during check-in, as our goal is to create a tranquil, calming environment. While the request may be unsettling at first, the resulting vibe it helps foster is something our guests appreciate. Based on your feedback, we have now re-worded our policy in order to avoid coming off as overbearing.

Regarding your comment on tips, all staff members on-site are salaried employees. As specified in the guest book, tips are not mandatory. They are completely voluntary, and while an appreciated gesture, are not expected by the staff. We apologize if this was otherwise indicated.

Thanks again for your detailed feedback. We are glad you enjoyed the property and the staff. We would love to have you visit again.

Wonderful experience! Beautiful place, beautiful view, amazing food, wonderful staff and outstanding service! Easy to take the shuttle to the beach or $5 taxi to town. Very relaxing atmosphere. We had a room on the end on the second floor with a great view from both the balcony and the shower! All of the staff were very helpful with any request and very personable and friendly. Would definitely recommend this place and would definitely stay here again.

Room tip: Second floor probably has a better view.

From the moment we booked with Shelley at VBO to the minute they (sadly) dropped us off at the Liberia Airport we were treated like family! Absolutely the most wonderful staff - very helpful, honest and knowledgeable. Our suite was beautiful and we loved the storage available. The food was to die for at every meal and the drinks were perfectly made! They offered a scrumptious Romantic Dinner (off menu) that Shelley helped me plan w/out my S.O. knowing about and everything turned out very nicely! We never heard anyone in the rooms around us and the views were stellar! Lots of great nature viewing as well. Every excursion they planned for us was terrific and our drivers were very nice and we felt safe with them. Just cannot say enough wonderful things about VBO and their staff! We cannot wait to go back again!

Room tip: Our suite was on the end with no one on 1 side of us. #perfect #feltsecluded

This is an excellent place to get away and relax but also close enough to be shuttled into the midst of things. The food at the Villa Buena Onda is excellent (I never had a bad meal) and staff is friendly and I feel I got to know them. Sergio wad our go to guy for excursions. He was excellent at detailing our journey and helped us to get some wonderful pictures.

My wife and I stayed here for the last half of our visit to Costa Rica. After staying in Arenal, near the volcano, we enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere that Villa Buena Onda provided - especially the pool and beaches. The food was fantastic and the service was exceptional.

There are a couple items I would try to fix:
1. Noises from the upstairs rooms are easily heard in the room downstairs.
2. It would be great to have more Costa Rican food selections on the menu :)

We would stay here again and will recommend it to others. It was a great location with great views. The local beaches were relaxing and the boat tour was fantastic (Pacific Coast SUP & Surf with Eddie and Jorge).

Thank you for the awesome service!
