I discovered Nayara through Tripadvisor - it was named No1 luxury hotel in the World in the 2017 TA Travellers Choice Awards. It is certainly a stunning resort & would definitely feature very high on my list of favourites. The grounds are extraordinary - acre upon acre of lush, exotic manicured garden, it's just beautiful. Rooms overlook the jungle canopy, they are blissfully private & you feel literally wrapped in rainforest. The website photos don't nearly do justice to the beauty of the gardens or the outlook from rooms. I adored my casita deluxe, these are the entry level rooms but are huge, with 2 double beds, a large terrace overlooking the Arenal volcano, indoor & outdoor shower plus al fresco tub. Not to mention masses of storage & a generous array of lovely products. Golf carts are on hand to get around if needed & on arrival I was given a tour of the property by the wonderful Ronaldo who pointed out one of the five resident sloth bears. There are 3 outdoor pools, a handful of outdoor jacuzzis & various stunning spots to lounge. A bridge links up to Nayara Springs which is the adults only part of the resort. The pools & restaurants are nicer on this side & are accessible to all guests excluding children. There are some new additions to the resort which don't yet feature on the website or hotel map. A cappuccino bar, plus a very stylish Italian restaurant (Amores) offering elevated views across the resort. Food didn't blow me away here but was well presented, contemporary & light. It serves lunch & dinner but also a la carte breakfast. I greatly preferred this to the large buffet spread on offer in the main restaurant Altamira which is slightly functional in feel (& I dislike buffets). I gave Altamira a swerve for dinner but tried all others. My favourite by far was the fine dining restaurant Amor Loco where food was sensational in addition to being a very beautiful space. The interior is intimate & richly decorated or you can dine al fresco at one of a handful of tables overlooking the prettily illuminated pool. Either way, book ahead as there are only a few covers & this one is a gastronomic gem. I also liked fusion restaurant Asia Luna & the Nostalgia Bar for light tapas. Again, both are small so have their own individual ambience & aren't 'hotely' in feel. Service is good across the board & the hotel is exclusive to residents. Reception staff are friendly & switched on & you can arrange various activities through them. Or just stay put - I would have been very happy just wallowing in the grounds for the week. The gym is superb & the spa looks amazing. To sum up, Nayara is an excellent hotel & deserving of all the accolades & awards. I had a wonderful stay & would return in a shot.

I will start with the not so great because there is so little to mention... The hotel is located on a 3 hour drive from either San José or Liberia airports. There is a nearby airport for smaller aircraft and it is possible to fly there from the two other main airports but we decided not to. The drive from Liberia airport is on bad undulating and windy roads which in our case meant car sickness for half the family.

From the time we arrived at the hotel until we left a week later we were overwhelmed by the kindness and great service by the staff. We want to especially mention our guide Anna and doorman/buggy driver/frog expert Alexander and Ronaldo who all were immensely kind to our children! They engaged with both our children throughout the stay learning their names early on and really going out of their way to make sure they had a great stay. One night, Alexander came with a buggy to our villa to take us on a frog tour in his buggy around the resort. Unforgettable!

The rainforest villa we stayed in (no 49) is at the very top of the resort which meant we either had to take a buggy from there to/from the reception or breakfast restaurant or walk pretty steep paths. We had a stroller for our baby boy and walked most times but if you are elderly or have restricted movement you may want to ask for a villa closer to the resort's venues (alternatively having to call for a buggy every time you want to go somewhere).

The villa was well-furnished and "homey" even if the decor and colours would benefit from a freshening-up to a more contemporary style. It did not bother us but this was one of very small details that makes this resort different from lets say a Four Seasons. Also, because we were at the end of the resort the WiFi-connection was not great in the villa and we repeatedly had to go outside to catch the signal.

The breakfast and restaurants are great. Portion sizes are good and everything we ate was fresh and very tasty.

There is SO much to do in the area... just to mention a few things, we loved zip-lining (which worked very well even with a 6 year old although we did find our own operator as the zip-line suggested by the hotel would not have been as good for our daughter), visiting the hanging bridges, the butterfly park and look for sloths, monkeys, snakes, frogs and birds among other animals.

If one prefers to chill at the resort there are a couple of pool areas. We stayed with children so could not go over the bridge to the adult only sister hotel Nayara Springs but I was there to use the gym every day and saw the amazing pool.

It has happened to hotels we have stayed in before and I would not be surprised if Four Seasons bought this place in a couple of years. They just need to redecorate the villas, add a few key items to the breakfast and be ready to open with the new logo!

Dear ProTraveller,

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our hotel. It seems, overall, that you enjoyed your stay for which we’re very happy, we love hosting families with children, their level of excitement about the wildlife and the outdoor activities is just a breath of fresh air! We’re sorry to hear that the winding roads made your family a little car sick and the the wi-fi connection could’ve been a lot better (the second one we can definitely work on).

Please think of our hotel next time you’re planning a visit to Costa Rica. We would love to have you again in the future!

We arrived at the nayara hotel spa and gardens after a 3 hour car ride from Liberia airport and was wondering if all that travel was worth it. From the minute we got there we realized it was. The personal service from everyone who worked there especially Francisco was top notch. Our view of the volcano from our deck. Jacuzzi tub and hammock on deck. Outside shower in garden setting. Great food. One of the top resorts we have ever stayed at.

Nayara hotel is a whole complex with a bunch of rooms, multiple pools, multiple restaurants and beautiful grounds. We stayed 2 nights in a casita which was very nice. Large room with privacy. Nice bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower. Also had jacuzzi tub on outside deck where we could see Arenal volcano. My favorite part was the grounds. The landscaping was spectacular and I spent a good hour or two each day just walking around the property. The breakfast was good and as stated they put out granola bars and sandwiches which is very nice. For dinner, we ate in the main restaurant once on a grill night which was very good. The second night we ate in Amor Loco which was also good and is worth going to see even if you don't eat there. Service was great everywhere. The best thing was there was a three toed sloth about 25 feet from the door of our casita so I spent a lot of time watching him.

We stayed here recently for five nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I don't think the photos on the website truly do this place justice -- the gardens, the yoga pavilion, the swim up bar pool, the private jacuzzis located in hidden areas -- you truly cannot appreciate the beauty and how special Nayara is until you are there. We stayed in a casita, yet were able to use all the amenities of the springs villas (adults only) side of the resort. We had great massages here and did yoga as well. There is a really nice gym, too, but we were too busy doing excursions to use it. The food is amazing and we found that we filled up on the delicious and expansive breakfast buffet, allowing us to come back and eat dinner at one of Nayara's fabulous restaurants. Our favorite was Amor Loco. They also put out granola bars and sandwiches at breakfast for folks to grab on their way out to various activities. Totally worth the splurge to stay here and to truly feel pampered by the very attentive staff!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the volcano or a casita overlooking the jungle to see more wildlife
