Lavas Tacotal is a good mid-range option in a town where everyone charges too much in exchange for to few services and quality. Lavas tacotal is a no-thrills but friendly place with great views on the Arenal Volcano.

Room Tip: Rooms in the more recent part of the hotel are nicer.

The grounds are beautiful, the breakfast was pretty good, and I'm told there's a great view of the volcano however it was pouring buckets the entire time we were here and we couldn't see anything. The storms were so bad that the hotel (and all surrounding hotels and restaurants) lost power. But weather aside, I did quite like the hotel. It's not a walking distance from anything tho.. I recommend staying here if you have access to a car or are okay with taking cabs everywhere you go.

As said by many others, the place is run down a bit, rooms/bathrooms are spacy and clean as far as we were concerned. Breakfast basic but that seems to be the same everywhere in Costa Rica. Breakfast buffet usually run over by groups the minute they open it, which is at 7. If you are booked on a tour starting at 7:10 forget about breakfast.

Downtown is a 10 min drive, by taxi it is around 6.000 Colones one way.

If you are there just to do some tours and sleep this is a good place to stay.

Staff very friendly.

We had planned a one night stay here en route elsewhere. While I would not call it a mistake, there is little redeeming from this hotel. It is clean. However I'm writing this before 5am because these beds allow little sleep. This hotel might have been a gem in 1970 but its age definitely shows! The rooms are fine enough but the bed springs can be felt, and creak when you move. The grounds are pretty with nice views and the staff is nice enough. There are 2 pools with swim up bars that are unattended and dilapidated. That pretty much sums up this hotel. Breakfast is included so I'm cautiously optomistic that will be better... Only one more hour in bed until it opens - hope my back can make it!

When I give these folks the highest rating it is important to remember that I am rating them against similar properties. It would not be fair to judge them at the standards set for resorts hotels changing 8 times the rate. Keeping that in mind, this was an absolutely gorgeous place. I am referring to the manicured gardens. Like a fairyland without the fairies. The rooms were simple, clean, and adequate. My sister's room had an issue with their air-conditioner and a mechanic was promptly dispatched.

The included breakfast buffet was about as good and as complete as I have ever experienced. Fresh coffee, assorted fruits, scrambled eggs, pinto (rice & beans), ham, sausages, and maduro (fried bananas). All the staff was very friendly, professional, and always wore a smile.

If you are seeking a fantastic value, peace and quiet, and lovely surroundings and, can overlook very minor defects, this will be an excellent option. I should add that they have a couple of relaxing clean pools as well. Bravo Tacotal!

Room Tip: Choose rooms towards the back of the property nearer the volcano. But all are good.
