My family stayed there for six days and we found the staff to be exceptional. The owners, Terri and Freddie, set a very good example as they got to know many of the guests including us during our stay. Jese, with Jacamar Tours, was excellent at setting up our various tours and we had a blast. The front desk workers were helpful. The restaurant on site was good which was nice because the lodge is not close to town. The grounds were beautiful and the views were amazing (the sunrises were gorgeous). We stayed in a family cabin which gave us everything we could ask for, space and privacy. The only draw back was the lodge was not close to town but all the tours came with transportation.

Room Tip: The chalets have the best view and the family suite has the most space with 2bedroom/2bath.

I stayed in Chalet 204 for two nights with my teenage boys. The spacious room had a fantastic view of the Arenal Volcano and the hiking trails, horse stables, butterfly and traditional gardens right on the hotel grounds really set this hotel apart. Additionally, there were game tables (foosball, checkers, chess, and billiards), exercise equipment, swimming pool, and jacuzzis available for guest use.

The lodge was very conveniently located for the offsite activities that we chose to do (Original Arenal ATV Tour and Sky River Drift Zip lining and Tubing Excursion), as well as others that we will have to do on our next visit (1968 Trail, Arenal Observatory). There is an activities desk right on the premises that offers a wide variety of tours and excursions as well.

The included breakfast buffet served in the lodge's restaurant was very good as was the lunch and dinner that we ordered a la carte.

The road leading up to the lodge was long, steep, and bumpy (as others have commented), but, in my opinion, this only enhanced the "specialness" of the hotel, situating it high above the town and isolating it from everything but the howler monkeys, toucans, and other fauna that also call the forest surrounding the lodge "home."

This is a great lodge with a fantastic location (right in front of Arenal Volcano). Our experience (my girlfriend and I) was very positive: the room (and the bathroom too!) was clean (important) and it has great views to the volcano. The restaurant offers great views of the volcano while you enjoy very good food. Also, the service was very friendly, efficient and timely.

The pool area and the jacuzzi are in good shape...however, on the "not so good" side there is only one thing to note: the place needs maintenance, especially the butterfly/hummingbird garden and some parts of the facilities.

An interesting place to stay. I would recommend staying here...have fun!

Room Tip: Room 345 has great views of the Arenal Volcano

We only had one night here and were lucky to catch the weather just right. The volcano view is simply stunning.
The rooms are somewhat colonial in style and quaint, but perfectly acceptable and actually in keeping with the setting.
Take time to walk to the various trails. The butterflies and hummingbirds are simply gorgeous and compete for your attention.
There is a nice infinity pool and jacuzzi overlooking the volcano.
Alas the food, whilst OK, is nothing to write home about.
As others have said, to get the view you have a drive up the mountain side from the main road. As we had a hire car that was no problem to us.
If we had the opportunity to come back to the area I'd stop here again for the views.

The good: Our room was great - very clean and bright and the staff was amazing. The grounds are simply lovely with a striking view of the volcano and two gorgeous, very long hiking trails that were some of the best we've ever been on. The drive up is not bad at all. Yes, it's a winding road but it's certainly doable even without four-wheel-drive. The breakfast buffet is very good and includes both Tico and American options, including fried plantains, beans and rice, scrambled eggs, cereal, pancakes, sausage, etc.

The downside: Dinner was bad...the worst meal we had during our eight days in Costa Rica. The gym is a joke, so don't plan on working out if you're staying here. Internet was spotty, but we didn't to on vacation for wifi so that didn't bother us. The coffee provided in the room isn't good. Do yourself a favor and get your morning joe from the breakfast buffet, where it's much better.

Overall, I would recommend staying here and would definitely return.
