We recently stayed at Xandari, 1 night after flying into San Jose and 2 nights at the end of our trip before departing San Jose. We loved the grounds and the villas. We stayed in 2 villas, 22 and 24, and both were incredible. No problems or issues whatsoever. Really liked the mini-bar and complimentary drinks in the room. We enjoyed the food --and we are really picky and critical about what we eat. I can see how some people may not enjoy it, especially if they are used to TGIFridays or McDonalds, so come with an open palate and mind. But they do have a bocas menu with things like chicken fingers and pizzas if you aren't adventurous. The staff was very nice...we especially liked Marcos and Christian. My husband and I had 1.5 hour couples massage and it was heaven. We hiked all of the trails. There is free internet, games, books, puzzles in the main building as well as a gift shop. Reading through past reviews, I really don't see how people complain about it being a dark, treacherous walk to the main building. We were as far away as it gets and walked at night all of the time. They leave flashlights in the room if you are scared to walk in the dark or you can call to get picked up in a golf cart. Also if you have a problem with the early morning sunlight, they have sleep masks at the front desk. The only complaints I have are that we heard people partying down the road (off the property) one night, and another night it was so windy that we felt like the villa was going to blow over. Not really the fault of the resort, but we did not sleep well either night. It was also a little chilly during our massages since the huts are open air. And we didn't like the lack of mobility and isolation we felt since we like to explore. So just keep in mind nothing is really in walking distance, but if you are looking for relaxation and romance, its great! I would stay here again, but I'd do it in the exact same way...as a jumping off point near San Jose.

A really lovely location, where everyone wants to help!

We were collected (complimentary) from the airport and taken to the hotel It was late and the hotel was in darkness. Costa Rica, from what we saw, doesn't stay up late! The room (prima plus villa) has an amazing view and it was fabulous to peer out of bed at the Central Valley. However, there were no curtains! Which after 23 hours travelling with a toddler who gets up at dawn was heart wrenching.

However, relaxation at one of the pools made up for it the next morning. Although, there isn't much in the way of changing rooms, or WC's adjacent to the lower pool.

I would reccommend you try the hotel for yourself.

This was my second visit to the Xandari Resort in the central valley of Costa Rica. Again, I opted for a great package that gives you both hotels. What a paradise, when we walked in everyone greets you like you were an old friend. We had one of the larger suites. It was my sister-in-law's first trip and she was totally in awe of the views, the room and the warmth of the wonderful staff. We ate all our meals on a veranda overlooking t Alajuela and the mountains, the food is wonderful, the staff is amazing and your glass is never empty. We both had Spa treatment and could hardly keep our eyes open after the great experience. The owners have made their hotel a place of peace and beauty.

Our first day was pure relaxation, our second day we took a day trip with friends that were also staying at the Xandari. William Vargas our drive and tour guide picked us up early in the morning. Check out his web site www.rutaverde.cr or call him (506)243-1150). I'd highly reocmmend him, he knows the roads and is a safe driver, a certified guide, speaks English and is extremely pleasant. Give him a call.

I guess by now you know I would recommend the Xandari in Alajuela to you. Check out my review of the Xandari Pacific.

We had been booked into the Peace Lodge for the first two nights of our trip to CR, but as we all know, that area was devastated by the earthquake the week before we arrived. Our travel agent quickly switched us to Xandari in Alajuela, which is 15-20 minutes from the airport. What a jewel! We had a “prima plus” villa (#14), which was gorgeous. The resort is set in a fabulous botanical garden with pathways and signage identifying all the beautiful plants. Our villa had a sitting and dining area, sleeping area, wet bar and refrigerator, two patios with beautiful furniture and landscaping, an entry garden, and a shower with a full view of the entry garden (so don’t forget to lock your gate!). The first night, we had a 4.2 earthquake which woke us up. Sounded like a freight train and just shook the bed and lights and rattled the windows. I can’t even imagine what a 6.2 would have been like. DH of course thought this was exciting, but I was pretty scared having seen the photos from the week before. So were several of the staff the next day who asked if we’d felt it. Breakfast was complimentary with plenty of choices, from eggs and bacon to pancakes to fruit and yogurt, muffins, etc. We fell in love with Costa Rican bacon (“tocineta”) and DH loved their fruit smoothie. I had a manicure and pedicure in the spa and wished I’d scheduled more services—it’s an incredible setting and their prices were very reasonable, so plan accordingly. We sat by the pool, read books, played Scrabble, and rested. The staff was so nice and helped us brush up on our Spanish. This was the perfect place to be introduced to Costa Rica.

We did a fairly typical trip to costa rica - 2 weeks, starting and ending in san jose; one day at the beginning and the end at xandari. it was much more expensive than any of the other places we stayed in arenal, monteverde or manuel antonio, but it was really special. one perk is that they pick you up from the airport and send you back (saving you that expense). emerging from the airport is a bit of a zoo so its nice to have someone waiting for you. the xandari grounds are beautiful. we did a short hike to one of the waterfalls and would have liked to do more exploring. the pools are also pretty. the entire resort is as billed: peaceful, tranquil. we found the front desk staff very accommodating. even before we got there, they helped us arrange a rental car (delivered to the resort and dropped off there, competitive prices). the villas themselves were great. we stayed in a regular villa, then an "ultra plus"villa on our last day there, new years eve. What a treat that was! while the kids slept, we watched the twinkling lights of central valley and the ongoing parade of fireworks from our own balcony overlooking the entire vista. the villas are quirky and beautiful with the owners own art work and aesthetic. the free juices and colas and crackers were much appreciated.

dining there was overrated. good breakfast buffet with fruits, juices, cereals, eggs, but the dinners we had were a little disappointing. a few of the dishes were delicious, others were supremely average. the servings really are small, and we are not huge eaters. unfortunately, you are a bit of a captive audience, though you could venture out for dinner, it's so much more convenient to saunter to the restaurant or take a little golf cart down the paths from your villa.

very relaxing way to start and end the trip. we wish we could have spent a little more time there and arrived sooner to enjoy the views and the walks.
