Hotel is an about 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive from Pudong Airport. The connection is quite good, as it is mainly one highway from the airport.

Rooms are quite large. Bathroom has a walk in shower.

Beds are reasonable soft and comfortable.

Electric plugs are next to the bed and desk.

Internet is LAN and Wifi based. Speed is far below average and the VPN is seldom working. Facetime and Skype work barely.

Breakfast is quite good, even with some blue cheese.

My room was on the 25th floor. Even though some construction went on, it was not loud.

I stay at the New Century Grand Hotel when I travel for business that is close to the hotel. If you are traveling to Shanghai for holiday and want to check out downtown Shanghai I suggest you stay somewhere close to downtown. The rooms are rather nice and are a good size. Bathrooms are well-appointed and look nice. The breakfast buffet here is one of the best I've had in Asia; they have a lot of variety and the western dishes are relatively close to what they should be. There is a shopping mall that is semi-attached to the hotel that has a lot of shops and restaurants. The airport and downtown Shanghai are about 1 hour away by taxi so be aware if that is where you want to be.

This hotel is in the industrial area of Shanghai in Songjiang and it takes nearly one hour from PVG international airport by a cab. And Shanghai city center is also nearly
one hour drive by a cab from this hotel. Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) airport is 30 mins from this hotel and is connected to most destination in Mainland China,

This is a very nice hotel, but falls well short of a 5-star advertised status. In any hotel, irrespective of price range, my basic requirements are quiet, a decent bed, good internet access, comfortable temperature, clean bathroom, some kind of gym and a work desk. In a 5-star hotel, I expect very quiet, excellent internet access, effective and quiet temperature controls, a well appointed bathroom, a very well appointed gym and a very nice work desk. The New Century Grand, which purports itself as a 5-Star hotel meets most of the criteria, but falls well short on two very important ones. The internet access is very slow and in some cases, there were extended periods where I could not send an email or access many common sites, because they timed out. It has been a long time since I have been this frustrated with a hotel's internet access; it is not the country, because on previous trips, and even on the same trip in the same city in a nearby hotel, I have experienced excellent internet access. Also, the temperature controls were essentially non-existent. I was living in 27C to 28C rather than a more comfy 22 to 24C. The only hope to cool the room was to open the window, which of course is only effective when the outside temperature is cooler and there is some air movement; this worked 1 out of 3 days during my visit.

However, in all other respects, the hotel was great. I did not have problems with English language skills; there was always someone who would step in if a staff member was struggling with my request. And, afterall, this is a Chinese speaking country!! I can also say the staff were very helpful, friendly and tried very hard to please.

Other than the above, the room was great: very comfy bed, on a par with a Hilton, a very nicely appointed bathroom with both a tub and a shower as well as a scale, plenty of hot water, etc. The TV carried CNN which was appreciated and certainly not expected. The closet was spacious and there were plenty of quality wooden hangars. Light controls were wonderful; a master switch beside the bed permitted easy turning out of all lights when I wanted to sleep.

So, lots of good, even great things about this hotel, but very poor internet service and lack of decent room temperature means I will not be returning.
