I am not a big fan of Shanghai, it is a giant concrete Jungle with horribe traffic and smog, but when I am there, Grand Hyatt makes it all better.
the hotel is very close to "bund" area which has majority of attractions and restaurants. It is part of a grand tower and the Lobby is on 54 th floor or something like that. the hotel has been there for a while so there are signes of aging here and there, but you forget about them rather quickly. The Bell service was great, front desk staff very friendly, everyone spoke english fluently, and check in process was very easy and nice.
The room was good, and view was nice, but the bathroom was AMAZING, I actually took some pictures of the bathroom, with huge soak in tub, sculptures, very nice vanity and great aminities. my favorite however was that the closet in the hallway opened in the bathroom as well so you did not have to go around to get to your clothes, and you could just open the door and get dressed in the bathroom. the tea service setting was absolutly beautiful as well. I first thought it was part of the decor and artwork in the room...
Breakfast was very good, good selection of western and chinese breakfast, I do suggest indulging in the chinese breakfast, while you are there, it is very good and safe to eat (for those of us Americans who are affraid of anything that is not an American chain). the only sad part is that it was not included in my room rate!
the hotel has many bars and lounges, I do recommand the piano bar if you like to feel like you are in chicago in the 40s and would like to have some good scotch and smoke a cigar with a live band and decent enough singer (Billie Holiday will not be performing). there are series of restaurants on one of the floors from your choice of sushi, italian and steak house, all excellent, and if it is your first time I highly recommand cloude nine, a beautiful club on top of the tower with amazing view of shanghai river, I felt like this is how a NYC night club would have been in the 1920s... so if you go there, don't do what I did, and actually put something nice on... but if you are not up to par with attire, they are still very nice to you
Hotel servises are great, gym is small but very new and clean with full staff. the pool is amazing, you have to take a dip if you are there even only for a night, the only thing there was no jaccuzzie tub, but you don't really need it with the amazing bathroom setting in the room. Hotel does have car service but there are cabs also lined up and are very fairly priced. I would say no to car service and get in the cab instead.
My fav part about the hotel was its price, for less than 300$ a night, I felt like I was staying at a much more expensive establishment. If the price doesn't win you over, the service will...
