Excellent service, efficient airport pickup (we definitely recommend this), impeccable rooms and a fabulous wine cellar.

Room Tip: Choose the executive suites, they are on the higher floor and allow use of executive lounge

The Okura Garden Hotel Shanghai is situated in a very good location (just near Huaihai Rd), with good access to metro lines and public transport, although the hotel itself feels a bit worn down. The service is good with friendly faces everywhere, but from the rooms to the Executive lounge the feeling is of a hotel that has seen its best days long ago. For a stay in Shanghai i would recommend other options...

This hotel was recommended to me and even though it wasn't close to The Bund and even though it's possibly not considered five-star, we couldn't have been happier staying here.

And just in case you read no further ...

Be mindful - the beds are VERY, VERY firm. I can't emphasise this enough. When you sit on them they have NO give in them at all. We loved this but others might not. It is a Japanese hotel, so the beds are almost like futons. And the pillow choice is limited to two types - one feather, the type that squish up into nothing and one seed/buckwheat filled (Japanese-style). So no foam pillows.

The location is great - very close to a metro stop (only two-minutes away, press the "English" button and navigate your way anywhere, though the taxis are very cheap and very trustworthy); very close to a small supermarket (bottom of the Parkson Department Store, about three-minutes away); smack-bang in the middle of the French Quarter (walk to the street behind the hotel and go exploring) and wonderful to come home to at the end of the day and have a bit of space around you (large garden at front of the hotel).

The staff are magnificent - there's loads of them and they're very helpful. We utelised the concierge practically every day (getting them to write down in Chinese the various places we were going to venture to, in order to show taxi drivers or people on the street); the business centre staff were extraordinary (we were able to get local Sim cards here for our mobile phones and an array of other tips and help); the staff in the Rose Cafe were great and quickly learnt how we liked our coffee (yes, you can order espresso coffee, which doesn't cost any extra, but it won't be offered to you, so ASK). We were just thrilled with the staff and almost for this alone it is worth going.

And the rooms - spacious, quiet, but pay the extra and go for a garden view. It's so nice to wake up and look at that space in front of you and also at night, it's nice to see the lights of the city just that little bit away from you. The other vista from the "back" rooms is interesting - the crowd of apartment buildings and, if you're up high enough, the flyovers of the freeways. But the Garden room is the way to go. And remember to ask for a non-smoking floor, because we are in China, in a Japanese hotel and both cultures like to smoke.

We found the breakfasts good value and plenty of variety, though some things were not to our tastes. They cater for western-style breakfasts but also Chinese and Japanese. And, as mentioned earlier, they do have espresso coffee and it's quite good, so don't be afraid to ask. For us, it was easier to start our day having breakfast here and then venture out on a full-stomach for taking on the busy city. We also went in winter, so it was important to have enough fuel on board to stay warm.

If you don't mind the firm beds, I can't really see why you wouldn't enjoy your stay here. It's a great hotel.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a Garden view room. It's worth it to look at the greenery of the park in...

It is an old hotel at good location. But if you are looking for a good relax at the pool or workout at a gym or other recreational activities after a busy hectic day in the town - then you might be surprised and disappointed that they are not part of the package you have paid - i.e. it is not free! It was the first time I was asked to pay for having a swim of all the hotels I have stayed at different cities. Also they charge RMB5 per minute to use the internet access at the business centre. Also the food selection does not seem to be as good as other hotels of similar rating in the town.

I am a regular visited to Shanghai, and have been to a copule of international hotels in the city, Okura is still my favourite. Location is key and Okura is in the heart of French Concession, with tree lined avenue around. Love walking around the many interesting small shops. A sad point is many of these are disappearing due to rapid development. The spacious garden in front of the hotel together with the restored hotel facade, had old Shanghai charm that other newer establishment cannot match. Like other Japanese establishments, good service is standard and there remains a sense of Japanese zen in the midst of a busy hectic city. Visitors who have not been to Japan will not understand, but the standard water jet toilets in the room is a true personal luxury. Free Internet in the room but no wifi, pity as I love my iPad. Comfortable bed with night dress and bathrobe a nice touch. Though pretty standard in Japan, a nice touch for the weary traveller anywhere. One issue is the breakfast, pretty expensive at around RMB200/person. Decent basic selection, but I much prefer the variety and quality plus view at Shangri-la. But for all the other pluses.. Okra Garden is still my choice in Shanghai.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the garden much nicer. Try to insisted on non smoking rooms if you do not smoke.
