The China Maritime Museum is about one hour away from Shanghai's city center, in the south of Pudong, about a 20-30 min walk from the end of metro line 16 (Dishui Lake).
We combined our tour to the beautiful lake with a visit to this museum. On two main floors you can get a great overview on the history and modern maritime life in China. Lots about the history of navigation, a huge amount of various ship models, an insight of a container harbour and more. They also show movies in a 4D theater. The center of it all is a Chinese junk that was built especially for the museum.

We spent nearly 2 hours here and the kids (age 8 and 9) had fun.

The museum was certainly far away from the city center and everything else. But it's worth a visit if time is not a concern. There were a lot of information to absorb -- it helped that we had a guided tour. There were some hands on, experiential activities, e.g., a 3D experience inside a simulated ship, a simulator for you to try your hands on loading containers, etc. If time allows, it's a nice activity away from the crowd.

We have been visiting the Maritime Museum with a bunch of kids and we had a good time there. Anyway do not expect too much from the museum cafe and shop, those left is rather disappointed after an one hour ride from downtown. Anyway, bring a lunchpack or go to one of the adjacent hotels.

Cool museum though may not be so informative for English speakers due to less detailed English signage. But certainly very rich in artifacts and information on Chinese maritime history.

I particularly liked the huge Chinese junk they built there in the middle of the museum. The kids liked all the ship models they have there. Enjoyable day out for the family.
