My partner and I are sitting by the waters edge as we write this review. This place has captured our heart and soul. The staff have made our time the most enjoyable part of this holiday.

Zack - 23 years and still loving what you do, what an amazing man you are. Thank you for the beautiful cocktails each night!

Seru- what a cute young polite gentleman, we loved being served our amazing dinners by you! Vinaka :)

Lini- what a beautiful smile you have and always willing to assist us from the front reception with any queries we had!

Freddy - thank you for your patience trying to assist me with paddle boarding- it is a lot harder than it looks!

Vita- wow , amazing masseuse, I feel asleep and woke up feeling so refreshed.

Masi - the sound of your voice is absolutely beautiful and loved you and your band singing and serenading us at dinner.

‘Captian’ Apel- your giggle is contagious and we thank you for taking us on many excursions around Fiji.

To all the other staff that do an amazing job we love you and appreciate all that you do to make Toberua such a magical place to visit!

Highlights -

- no internet on our Bure so we could completely switch off.( excellent wifi at the bar if needed)
- hammock overlooking the water... I finished my book in absolute tranquility.
- 5 star food every day and night, Thank you Matthew and the chefs for making our waistline expand a little :)
- water sports - the snorkeling was amazing and the coral and fish are breathtaking.
- bird Island , lots of amazing boobie birds and others that allowed us to take some wonderful photos.
- village tour, this really has changed my whole perspective on life. So many wonderful souls with the bare essentials and still laughing , smiling and loving life. Australians have a lot to learn about the village life style and not be so worried about material things or mod cons.

Feedback-

- snake are present yes but at no time did I feel unsafe.. they are apart of this beautiful landscape and they keep to themselves
- hot water in the shower is a little sporadic at times but lucky it’s humid so cold showers aren’t too bad! :)
- happy hour should be introduced to encourage more people to be at the bar before dinner and socialise. I agree that the tax is high for alcohol but one drink is better than none?
- meals are a little pricey but the quality def makes up for it!
- slip slop slap , the UV is very high here and even if there is no sun you can still get burnt.. ( I learnt the hard way!)
- I suggest buying some reef shoes($10 from target/k mart) to prevent stepping on sharp coral when in the
water.

We have travelled all over the world and have visited many amazing places, however nothing compares to this slice of heaven we found while being here at Toberua.

Thank you max and sandy from the bottom of our hearts.
Much gratitude,

Sarah and Sharon

Thank you for your great review. We are working on replacing the water heaters which will help prevent any further temperature control problems. We hope to see you back on our little island again someday.

What a heavenly place! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Toberua. It's hard to believe that such a picturesque place exists! The snorkelling along the reef was beautiful and the weather was just incredible. Definitely miss laying out on our own hammock and looking at the gorgeous scenery. So cool hearing the drums signal meal times too and the service was wonderful. Truly lovely people. If you're looking for a tech-free, super relaxing getaway, then Toberua is for you.

Absolutely amazing trip! This is a top notch place. Plenty to do on the island and plenty of space just to be still and relax as well. All the staff is very welcoming from the moment you arrive for the boat transport. They never stop smiling! It certainly feels like family very quickly. Food is fresh, local and prepared very well. Wallu in particular was scrumptious! The island offers a nice breeze and plenty of places to escape the sun if you need to. Freddy is helpful with tips on how to try any of the watercraft and Jone is the most patient and knowledgeable of scuba instructors. We were so thankful they offer the PADI diving course right there! What a treat to get certified in such amazing waters! Every night after a fun filled day it was great to have a cocktail and enjoy the sound of the Fijian musicians as they came to each table to sing for us. Such great hospitality. We absolutely loved our time here and would cherish a return trip!

Room tip: East side bures get a little more wind than west. For us that was perfect. Opened back doors completely and had a lovely tropical breeze!

Our family of 4 (2 adults and two girls 11 and 14) loved Toberua. It's an authentic, natural, friendly resort with fantastic service and beautiful natured staff. Plenty to see and do. I'll detail my review in different categories for you to get an understanding on this unique resort in the following points:

1. Logistics
2. Food
3. Bure's
4. Activities
5. Snakes
6. Note to the new Managers (replacing the old ones)

Here we go:

1. Logistics.
This is on the South East coast of Fiji (Viti Levu) and only 40-45 minutes away from Suva Airport (Nausori International Airport) including the 30 minute boat transfer. If you fly to Nadi or stay on the West Coast of Viti Levu, you need to be aware it is a 3.5 hour transit to get to Toberua. I recommend you fly to Suva

2. Food.
My family and I have been to 16+ resorts in Fiji and Toberua is equal to the best in terms of selection, freshness and quality in preparation. The Chef and his team are spectacular and prepare the amazing food with tremendous care and great understanding on how to make a fantastic meal. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are all varying menus every day. We recommend you get the meal deal so you don't have to worry about the cost because the taste and value is simply the best.

Drinks and cocktails are great with an ever changing cocktail of the day including mocktails and coconuts to consume.

At lunch and dinner there is live music where guitarists will sing and play.

3. Bure's
There are 15 Bure's surrounding the small 4 hectare island all which have water frontage and views. The resort is nearly 50 years old (Toberua is having it's 50th Birthday this year) and are rustic and traditionally authentic with high timber ceilings with bamboo support and rope tied joists and bearings. Timber floored and have timber sliding doors. There is no air-conditioning but the screened slats and ceiling fans provide a nice cooling breeze. There was no real need for air-conditioning and you could always find your comfort point. There is a fine line between rustic and in need of repair which I will detail at the end of this review in my note to the new managers.

The bathrooms have been recently renovated so are more contemporary with nice open shower, vanity and doors that open up to a private small courtyard so when you have a shower with the doors open, it is like you are in the open (privately of course)

4. Resort/Activities.
Every day there is a new adventure/activity sheet delivered the night before detailing what is happening the next day. This includes the chargeable snorkelling trips, day trips to villages, mangroves, remote islands, bird island and SUVA to name a few. It details other activities like dinner events (Lovo - local underground BBQ), handline fishing, beach volleyball, bocce and scuba diving. They have a table tennis set, pool table, board games and card games near the bar area so there is always something to do. There is a simple Gym with a rowing machine, cycling machine and some free weights. The pool is nice and a good escape or when the tide is low and difficult to swim on the beach. Nice lounge chairs and a mini cabana.

Watersports are great. A nice watersports bure where you can Catamaran, SUP (Stand up Paddle Board), Kayak, scuba and snorkel off the island. This can be done in nearly all tides but some activities like Catamaraning are not possible at low tide. You can swim at low tide but only from the water sports area as it is too shallow anywhere else on the island. The motored water vessels are all in good condition with recent outboard motors.

There is a Day spa Bure where you can get pampered or get the kids and adults hair braided.

The golf course is a joke and can only be used at low tide. It is nothing more than puddles and sand where they have set up 9 holes to giggle and putt.

5. Snakes
We are not a snake fearing family (Aussies that are alert but not overly alarmed) so were not 'freaked out' by previous reviews indicating there were snakes on and around the island. If you have a phobia of snakes or could not cope seeing them in the wild, then Toberua is not the place for you unless you want to come here to clear your phobia. We would see 5+ snakes a day both on land and in the water and see fresh snake tracks in the sand every morning. If you want to know more about the banded sea krait - "Laticauda Colubrina" see a website search on this for more details. We saw them day and night and at the end of our stay, the girls and I were even picking them up by the tails and throwing them back into the water where they would swim away. They are non-aggressive but are poisonous and come to land to rest at night. You do need to keep all doors closed overnight and only open the meshed covered slats for the breeze.

Toberua is near the mainland where there are plenty of mangroves and the snakes are quite common. You need to be aware of this before you make your final decision to stay at Toberua.

6. Note to the new Managers (replacing the old ones).

We loved Toberua and would absolutely love to come back so the following notes are constructive comments/criticism for you to improve the quality of our stay if we were to return:

a. Keep the Chef. He is a legend and very good at what he does.
b. Take more care in maintenance and cleaning of the pool. It was mouldy and a little bit of care would have eliminated these blemishes
c. It's time to update some of the sea kayaks and Hobie cat. They are past their use by dates.
d. The table tennis table, nets and bats need to be replaced.
e. The Pool table needs to be replaced. The table bowed, distorted and is out of alignment due to age and the balls do not run smoothly when pocketed to the chute.
f. The sliding front doors in our Bure (12) were so poorly maintained it was really difficult to open and close both sets of doors.
g. The second ceiling fan (near balcony) only had one setting that would work - on/off and no speed selection. This needs to be repaired.
h. The toilet would get stuck and not stop so you had to second touch the flush to stop the flow. this should be repaired.
i. The hot water took at least two minutes before it got hot. This needs to be looked at.
j. The bill at the end of the stay was a big error where we were charged for drinks we never had and there were additional charges for the 'extended' handline fishing we were not aware would be charged.
k. The line to dry the clothes at the front porch broke. I asked someone to fix it and after a day I chose to fix it myself. Poor form.
l. You need to double check all this and more at the other Bure's. It's time for a good overhaul.

Room tip: Bure's 4-11 are on the south and windy side. 1-3 are the best location and 12-15 second best

You can be assured as the incoming managers we will not change the great things about Toberua that guests have enjoyed for almost 50 years. We are happy to share that the resort is closing for 2 weeks in February while we resurface the swimming pool, upgrade the Wi-Fi and do some maintenance on the bures and around the island. We hope to see you back at Toberua again sometime
