What makes this hotel great is its nod to the past while being entirely new. Add to this its location on one of the great hawker streets of Melaka. Chicken rice, popiah, banana leaf, laksa, oyster omelette, roast pork, cockles, BBQ pork, roti canai and pork buns are among the many fantastic foods we had, all located on bunga raya as you head into the unesco listed part of town. For this reason we found the location perfect, plus the ten to fifteen minute walk into town helps burn the extra calories off!
But back to the hotel, although it is not the cheapest hotel we stayed at in Malaysia it is by far the best value. The service was great, from the porters always there to open doors, to the turn down service in the evening with nonya sweets (which aren't too sweet and have a wonderful taste and texture). A cot was in our room upon arrival, just one example of the hotel's child-friendly policies. Wifi is only available in the lobby which provides a great excuse to hang out in the old mansion part of the hotel. The mattress and pillows were also wonderful. There's a bit of late night noise which may come from other rooms (tv's), or from outside (parties?), I couldn't quite work it out.
While walking around town we saw that the many guest houses in malacca are very affordable -probably more so than any where else we stayed in Malaysia. Perhaps this competition is why such a luxurious hotel is available at such a great price. Highly recommended.
