This year in January and February 2012 went up to Malacca stayed not for the second time but third consecutive time at hotel Equatorial Melaka. Honestly i fell in love with this old grand dame of Malacca. Previously on three visits stayed at Mahkota Melaka before I was advised by my travel agent to try hotel Equatorial. Since first check-in never regret staying at Equatorial. Location was damn good next to Dataran Pahlawan mall where I simply strolled down next door into the mall. Usually I did after a hearty breakfast which I find hotel breakfast satisfy my early morning crave. So easily accessible you can get a taxi from the mall to get you to Jonkers Street or even take you out of Malacca town to Air Keroh Jusco and Melaka mall. Though the taxi are not metered you need to bargain hard otherwise you be fleeced. From the Dataran you simply crossed the road opoposite to shop til you drop at the Mahkota Parade. Down the road a five minutes walk to Melaka Raya. You can pick and choose which authentic nyonya restaurants to pig out be it lunch or dinner you be spoit for choice - bon apetit so syiok and sedap.

Room Tip: Die die must request room on higher floors above 12 floors with a view facing the Malacca Straits...

I only had a one night stay but couldn't really fault the place. Looks like they've done some upgrading of late. Decent breakfast, decent room, though only had a small window, well equipped gym and big pool with some surrounding greenery. A bakery/coffee shop off the lobby sported cakes and doughnuts of monstrous proportions. Also a big bar/lounge off the lobby with pool tables and sport on the TV but it was empty even though it was a Saturday night. It has a 24 hour bar/coffee place outside the hotel also.
There's a big shopping mall next door and it's only 10-15 minutes walk to the main touristy drag. All in all, you could do a lot worse and I would go back.

Room Tip: The one I stayed, though pretty big, only had a small window and no balcony. Others did offer balcon...

We stayed at this hotel as a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids aged 7 and 5).

We had the Club Room and was checked in at the Club reception on a higher floor.

The hotel room was very nice we were very high up, the room was spacious, clena and modern, although I think our floor had recently been renovated as there were workman doing finishing touches in the coridoor so occassionally we had to step over large pieces of wood and breathe in the smell of paint, not a big issue to be honest. The one irritating thing about the room was that as we were high up our phone haad no reception, not a problem to the average tourist but I am self employed and like to be able to stay in touch. The room had access to internet but plug in not wireless. The bathroom was nice, big and clean and we had plenty of room to store our things and be comfortable.

The breakfasts were just Ok, nice enough but not fantastic, we are used to staying in very good hotels in the Far East where the breakfasts are superb quality, there was nothing wrong with the food at the Equatorial but it was just not on a par with other hotels we have stayed in, however the service was very good and the children were welcomed.

On one or two occassions we had tea and cake in the ground floor cafe this was very nice and enjoyed.

The swimming pool area was nice and the kids enjoyed it as it has sections and that made it more interesting to them, there was a counter where you could get towels and there was always plenty of sunbeds and parasols I found the pool area to be quiet which was nice. My only concern of the pool area would be if my kids had been younger such as toddlers because there were certain sections surrounding the pool boundary that had no edge protection and a toddler who is adventurous and has their parent take their eyes off them for a second of two could have had a nasty fall down the side of the hotel. This wasn't a worry for me as my kids are older but I would have been stressed out if they had been younger.

The hotel was in a reasonable spot we could get to most parts of the city in a 10 minute walk however as it was so hot we used Tuk Tuks that were outside the hotel entrance.

When we were planning the trip I used Trip Advisor for advice on where to go and stay etc, we were undecided between the Equatorial and Holiday Inn but a local guy advised the Equatorial would be better with young kids so not to have to keep crossing a busy road, we took the advice and was happy with the choice, we are going back this year.

Summary:
Good Points
Nice big club room
Really well priced
Nice pool
Good service

Bad Points
Food was just Ok
Pool edge protection for those with toddlers/babies

Nice, spacious hotel. As of April 2012 the rooms are being upgraded so it was 50/50 getting a new room. I had an old room however it was still comfortable, clean and pleasant although nothing special for this class of hotel.
Breakfast is comprehensive, but I'd expect that in this class, and the "etc." bakery is pleasant too. The evening wine bar was empty, however it was mid-week. There's a particularly pleasant swimming pool but note that the spa and gym (also very good) are one floor down so you must use the passenger lifts after a swim - hence changing twice if you fancy a sauna after your swim.
About the only downside is that there's no free wifi - even in the lobby - unless you pay. McDonalds - 25 metres away offers this so pop over there for coffee if you need to check your email.
The location of the hotel is central, near shopping and the sea.

Room Tip: Ask for a newly renovated room.
