This is a record store dealing in pre-owned, often prolific, collectables of many music genres.

The record album art is just fun to see and reminisce. Walking the isles of the store could be a walk down Abbey Road and all the connotations. And, if you are wearing some – “These Boots Are Made For Walking” comes to mind.

The background music in the store, often played from the original vinyl provides a nice touch. We're told, sometimes travelling musicians in town for a gig will visit to search for some treasure.

Today we found and bought a Bob Dylan CD in great condition featuring his greatest hits.

The music specialty store is a swell place to peruse for great music of many eras. It is located on the ground floor outlier building on the south side of an old textile mill. The entire complex has been converted into Huntsville’s premier “artist colony” called “Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment.” So, after you find the music you like, you should also visit the many artist’s studios there.

The staff was very friendly and helpful! They gave lots of help and offered to order items as well. I’m from out of town visiting and always go to the local record store when I travel. This location was listed as the best in town. It did not disappoint. I look for mostly soundtracks and they had a great mix, mostly used.

The reason for the four stars and not five? You can’t find the place. It’s in an Arts Building which is a very large old brick structure with over 16 entry doors. They are located in a building off this. (A corrugated metal building for those also looking). GPS takes you to the Arts Building but when you arrive there are no signs to help you locate the record store. Their website tells you where they are but only helps if you are familiar with the area and the names of the buildings.

However, when you do find the store, you’ll really enjoy the staff and selection.

Vertical House is a very cool record store -- best I could tell, the ONLY real, locally-owned store of its kind in Huntsville -- and it's located in the equally cool Lowe Mill, an old mill that was converted into a really wonderful and rustic arts and retail center. The vinyl selection, new and used, is strong. Heavy on rock, but you'll find jazz, country, R&B, too. They have live shows once every so often. Check the hours before you go. It's not open every day, all day,. Well worth seeking out if you love music and vinyl.

Not sure why the other reviewer only gave VH three stars. That's an "average" rating, and I think VH definitely surpasses that designation. The selection is huge, and one great thing about VH is that they take consignment LPs as well. Consigners set their own prices, and because of that, I got Suicide's second record, still in the shrink, for $5, and an original Patti Smith Horses (white letters), also in the shrink, for $8. Because the selection is so huge, it isn't as well curated as it could be…but who cares? If you're willing to dig, you can pull some absolutely stellar finds. I'm not into 12" singles, but there's a big area in the back with scads of 12"s, most cheap, that looks like it could be a DJ's wet dream. Aside from that, the staff is super friendly and books live shows in a town that is virtually devoid of live music. I'm a transplant from Chicago, where we have myriad record stores, some literally world famous, and I feel Vertical House is definitely above average. If you're coming through and are into vinyl, check it out…but make sure you have adequate time to really peruse the stacks.

The Valley Planet survey rated Vertical House Records 1st "Best Place to Buy Music for Listening." I guess it is the best place in Huntsville if you're into vinyl records, new or used, as this is their specialty. Anyway, they're the kind of friendly folk who greet you when you come to the store. This is their new, bigger store at Lowe Mill. (It's down the dock, turning right just before the bathrooms.) The store opens at noon, Wednesday thru Saturday. I'm not sure it's air conditioned, so in the summer you might want to get there right at noon before it gets too hot. Sometimes they invite bands to come play on the dock, and they sometimes give away stuff. Talk to them if you want to convert your favorite old vinyl LPs to MP3.
