“CAMPING IN GULF STATE PARK IS AWESOME!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2010

Contrary to the other reviews about the park being unsafe, or that there is no "privacy"...? It is a campground! There are plenty of campsites to select from, each of which has ample space and is well maintained. There are two-lane roads throughout the park, and they are able to accommodate bicycles just fine - the park has a speed limit of 25mph. Make sure you see Big George, the resident Gator! Look near spot 405...no one camps there, so you won't bother anyone!

As for their BATH HOUSE - AMAZINGLY CLEAN AND UP TO DATE. I am in the hotel business, and the cleanliness merits a 4 Star rating! I know how hard it is to keep a bathroom looking clean, and this camp ground has done a GREAT job!

Not too much shade, but blame Hurricane Ivan for that! Just ask for a shady spot and the staff will accommodate.

As for the staff not knowing about the conditions in the Gulf with the oil...while we were there, the flag colors changed 3 times in 3 days. No one should be blamed for the conditions in the Gulf except BP. There is no way to know minute-by-minute what is happening. We were not able to swim because of the double red flags, but the staff encouraged us to travel further east for the day...we did, and we "out-ran" the oil for a fantastic family day at the beach!

Visit Alligator Alley while you are there...something else to do away from the beach!

We didn't actually stay the night at the park because we were not initially impressed. The women at the registration office were very nice but not knowledgable about the oil conditions. We were told that red flag meant that swimming was not allowed, which we know is not true. Red flag means high surf. There were many people on the beach and in the water but we chose not to chance the dangers of the oil and dispersants used in the water. The site we were given at first did not have any shade or privacy of any sorts. It was a cramped site. Maybe some other areas of the park are not as bad. I do believe that once all the construction and reconstruction of the park is done and the water is safe that it will once again be a nice park.

As soon as the recreation area is finished with construction this will be a 5 to include a swimming pool, tennis courts and wifi. The campgrounds are positioned for semi privacy and are nicely spaced with options for sun or shade. We camped in one of the newer pull-through sites along the canal. The few extra dollars per night for this premium site puts you right on the water and much closer to the path to the beach. The bathrooms were well lit, updated and clean. We even had Mr. Alligator swim by in the canal one evening.

Keeping in mind that the campground activities center is under construction, this campground was outstanding! The grounds are very clean and well kept, the bath facilities were the best we have seen in a long time. Roads and site pads are paved so dust is minimal. When the laundry facility and fun center is done, this place will be near perfect. The campground is secluded enough to offer nice quiet get away, yet close driving to all nearby attractions and beaches. The staff was helpful and curteous.

We dearly love Gulf State Park for camping. We have witnessed the most gorgeous sunsets at Lake Shelby. The facilities are always clean and the people are so courteous.
