Kolkata : Tollygunge Club: "Excellent place to stay"
Date: Feb 2011

We had a relative who is a member of this club and that the reason we had an oppurtunity to stay. The club is a very old club and has a huge area to itself which is well maintained. The rooms are very neat and clean very much comparable to a 4 star hotel. Toilets were clean and well equipped. Being a club there is enough area to play for kids. There are around 4-5 restaurants of different cuisines. All the food and drinks are at a very subsidized rates. One of the restaurants is facing a 18 hole golf course.

The place is also centrally located. Metro stations is 5-8 mins walk. All places of interest easily accesible. THe central shopping area is also around 15-20 mins by cab. Cabs are easily available outside the club. From the Metro station there is Goverment run AC bus which ferries to and fro from the airport.

This club and hotel is set in the most magnificent grounds. It was a relief and a pleasure to leave the noise, the smog and the mayhem of Kolkata outside the gates and relax in the verdant parklands of the Club. We got one of the new rooms and it was stunning and spotlessly clean. As positive as all this was, the negatives were substantial. The restaurants were overstaffed and dirty. The food was almost always dreadfully poor. I too suffered a nasty stomach upset from the Chinese menu. The outdoor areas were scruffy. The indoor pool was scruffy. The uniforms were scruffy. The level of service provided was directly related to the amount of tips paid over. No tip...no service. As other reviewers have said, this could be an outstanding hotel. It is in urgent need of new management.

My friend from England insisted we stay at a club in Kolkata to experience the British Raj legacy which her parents lived in 70 years back. Tollygunge Club was an obvious choice.
Located slightly away from the heart of the city, the club and all its amenities sit in the midst of its relatively small 18 hole golf course. A wonderfully green and quiet oasis in an otherwise chaotic city. The club is broken up into old builings which house the food outlets, indoor swimming pool and sports centre and two more modern buildings which house the rooms. The rooms in the older block are wonderfully large and overlook the golf course, however beware that the furnishings and fixtures could do with an overhaul. The new block was being refurbished and the rooms refurbished to date were comfortable, bright and had modern amenities.
You do have a choice of eating outlets but the fare, whether Indian or English, still remains peculiarly of the1940's. The food is bearly passable and the waiters fairly sullen and jaded. The breakfast buffet is unmemorable. The prices of food and drinks are outlandishly cheap, which makes one remember that one is not here for the fare.
If you enjoy sports then you are spoilt for choice. Golf, swimming, tennis, riding, squash, billiards, cards, fitness centre are all available.
If you want to sample the Raj legacy of Kolkota or a quiet holiday then Tollygunge is a perfect choice. Being more of a weekend club avoid Saturdays and Sundays if you want peace and quiet.

I tried to book rooms here based on the good reviews, but was told that this is a club, and only provides accommodation to members, or guests of members, or members of another club affiliated to the Tolly. Since I did not qualify, I've had to look elsewhere. Just thought that none of the reviewers had mentioned this so I should point this out to others for future reference.

Was really looking forward to staying here because the theme of my Calcutta holiday is to explore all the architecture of the Raj in this city, and this would be a perfect place to stay, but Joe Public isn't even allowed entry to the bar for a beer.

So, are there any generous Tolly club members wishing to extend a warm invitation? :-)

The Club has seen better days despite having a wing with refurbished rooms. Nothing much works properly, the grounds are dirty and with stray dogs everywhere, and worst of all the kitchen is extremely unhygenic with cockroaches running around, even at the breakfast buffet in the restaurant. The Club still subscribes to the notion of Indian exceptionalism in the sense that standards are much lower than in the rest of the world when it comes to cleanliness and hygiene. Would not recommend this place to anyone. As someone else mentioned, this place needs new management and major investment.
