“amazing hotel made better by brilliant staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2012

The whole stay was fantastic. I stayed for a few nights on a business trip. The reception were friendly and helpful. The room was great. Well appointed furnishings and a really comfortable bed and pillow- wow did I sleep well! breakfast is amazing and given the huge array of choices I was lost. However, one of the staff suggested some local delicasies and an egg white suffle omlete- it was awesome. Would love to return and would suggest to anyone that they stay at this hotel if they can- its worth it.

Taj Bengal grounds are just really lush & beautiful, and it continues when one gets inside. The hotel is very clean with sparkling marble floors.

The decor everywhere including the rooms is lovely. I particularly love the Indian touches with the ethnic pieces on display in hallways and by the elevator.

I have stayed at Taj on every visit to Kolkata, and have noticed that the green/eco-friendly rooms have a musty smell. The hotel was very nice about moving me right away to another room. The other rooms and suites are great though with no dampness or musty smell at all.

The spa is very nice with polite staff. A bit expensive, but worth it.

The staff throughout the hotel is very welcoming and polite. Awesome breakfast. Although I love this hotel, one thing I will say - the food is rather expensive.

That said, it's not like hotel restaurants are cheap in India, so maybe Taj isn't that much worse in that regard. One exception is the bakery, which has some pretty good snacks that aren't very expensive.

Over my visits, only one thing turned me off a wee bit. Actually I was more amused than upset - the service is a bit of a racket in that a server will insist you fill out the questionnaire knowing it'll be a glowing review. Next morning, you're persona non grata.

Nevertheless, overall I'd say this is my absolute favorite hotel in India. It's downright perfect.

Room Tip: Stay away from the eco rooms if you have a mold allergy or are sensitive to dampness.

The hotel itself is lovely and very well appointed, much as you'd expect from a good quality hotel in India. However, I had some pretty bad experiences with damp rooms in my travels in Mexico in the past and found the odour of damp in my room a little difficult to cope with. The level of cleanliness in my room was not up to scratch, with a number fo random peanuts from a previous visitor dotted here and there around the room. To be honest, I stayed for one night and would not really want to stay another. A real shame as the place itself seems really great.

Room Tip: I may have drawn a oor room, so check out the condition of the room before accepting it.

The experience starts with the reception, which is as warm and friendly as it can possibly get. The sparkling Italian marble floors, admirably maintained, gives a wonderful feeling to a new guest. A personal assistant escorts the guest to the room, which is admirably appointed; possibly one of the best laid out and designed Junior Suites, I have ever seen. The bathroom is impeccable, and extremely well decorated for the guest in waiting; the housekeeping staff need to be commended. A floor staff member offers drinking water in bottles, without being asked; this is one of the most admirable features I have ever experienced.. In most hotels, I have cried myself hoarse asking for drinking water, and I do not have ordinary hotels in mind when I say this. The customary fruit baskets, and other similar things were good, but I found another remarkable thing. Something, according to the management, was not up to their standards, which I could not figure out. So, in apology, my daughters got two full fledged manicure sets as complimentary gifts. This was very thoughtful. The food in the hotel is excellent; the breakfast was sumptuous, and the meals were par excellence. This is certainly of of the prime properties of the Taj Group of hotels, and a visit is well worth it.

Taj Bengal is definitely one of the very good 5 Star Luxury properties in Kolkata and a jewel in IHCLs list. Being a Tata brand, you can rest assured get best of facilities and service. However, the service and food quality has severely deteriorated over last few years. I love the hotel but I wouldn't recommend you go to one of their specialty restaurants for a meal. I had a horrible experience last year during durga puja. Took my entire family out for lunch in Chinosery and it was a very bad experience. The staff was very unfriendly and had the "I dont care" tag on their face. They did away with their chinese speciality menu in the chinese speciality restaurant and offered a Durga puja special menu which was pathetic.....how funny can that be. To add on to it, they served in chipped plates. On pointing out, they just said sorry and changed the plate with my food on it. That was unbelievable. Food was just ok and nothing great. I can bet will get better food in any local Chinese joint. I felt customer service was at its worst. Didn't want to create a fuss about anything that day as was with family and it was the festival season. This experience made me feel extremely bad about Taj's service quality and CS ethics. Once upon a time, I used to be very frequent in Chinosery and Sonar Bangla but this experience made me feel that its not the same Taj anymore

Room Tip: Recently stayed with Swissotel in Kolkata, excellent overall experience
