“himalayan queen in distress”

we have visited darjeeling every year since 1979. Recent visit in october 2008, have made us to say that darjeeling, the queen of himalayas is under distress.Problem started from the foothills ,from new jalpaiguri station.no taxis, cabs were interested to travel to darjeeling. they preferred gangtok ,lava, kalimpong instead.after paying more for the trip we got one taxi after long search and paid more for the trip.
the journey was tedious. the roads were not properly maintained and from kurseong to darjeeling the road was terrible full of potholes. on the way we could see there are very few taxis plying on the road and the locals are desperately wanting to have a ride.
political disturbance by g.h.cl is taking the turn.flash strikes are common and there is a shortage of drinking water. roads are blocked and bandhs are common. local tour operators are only after money and their glum faces made our journeys less attractive. smoke and smog everywhere , litters are throwed everywhere. Most Hotels even dont have a proper tariff, their charges varies from tourist to tourist. The famous Mall is now a narrow bazzar with shops everywhere. The road starting from keventers to Mall is in very wretched condition. I think if this condition prevails Darjeeling will be extinct very soon as a queen of himalayas.

Have you ever wanted to see the ALPS in Switzerland but you could not afford it? There is a place closer to home and much cheaper..Cradled in the foothills of the Himalayas, Darjeeling stands out from other hills in its beauty and charm. Occasionally, politics of the region act as an impediment but most of the time it is a peaceful place.

It is famous for its Tea and boasts some of the finest boarding schools. It has a lot of hotels and restaurants. Moreover, if you are not very brand conscious you can shop till you drop as Darjeeling is famours for its imoprted clothes from Nepal and Singapore.

On a beautiful sunny day, Darjeeling is paradise.
The best time to visit is October but tourist seep on pouring in even in the months of November, December and january hopeful to see their first snowfall.

A large number of foreigeners are always present at any given time. Yu can see the beautiful range of the infamous Kanchenjunga mountains.

There are a lot of things to do in Darjeeling like horseriding, shopping, trekking.,etc

What else could you ask for ?

“A Little Piece Of Heaven”

Nestled in the cradle of the Himalayan Mountain range, the quaint town of Darjeeling is a must see. One can reach this tourist hot-spot via road or air. All flights, trains and buses must be caught from the city of Kolkata. Upon reaching Siliguri one can opt to reach Darjeeling by taking the toy train or go via the car. Though one reaches faster via the car, either way the view is fantastic.
Hotels are easily available and the local people are extremely helpful. There are many attractions in Darjeeling such as the Botanical gardens, the Zoo which holds animals such as the Yak, the Himalayan bear and the snow leopard. One can visit the Himalayan Mountaineering institute the only one in India or one can opt for the marvellous sunrise from Tiger Hill. If one is more inclined towards shopping, then Darjeeling is a shoppers dream come true, amazing stuff at throw away prices. One can shop till one drops but never feel the pinch in the wallet.
The best months to head there begin from September when the rains end. If one decides to visit in January or February one can expect to be rewarded with snow. Since the rains begin by late June, its best to visit before then, however the rains too hold a magical quality and prices are lower than at other times of the year. All in all Darjeeling, aptly named queen of the hills is an amazing place to visit at any time.
