Darjeeling is a place which is very laid back. You will love it here but the kids get bored a bit. This zoo is very nice and a break for them . Very green. Quite a few animals like a red panda, bear, royal Bengal tiger, black panther. Nice birds. It also has a small cafeteria where you can rest and have a cup of tea.

Some animals are OK in zoos, typically the social ones which live in groups. Big cats tend to be solitary and territorial, and need safari parks not cages. You can spot when they are going insane as they repeat the same short routine (e.g. a figure of eight) over and over again. Saw a tiger doing that here, and a bear too. That's the sight of an animal going mad.

So that upsets me, but the rest of the zoo, though small, was very nice. It's atmospheric up on a hill, and the mist really adds to it. I enjoyed the langurs, and the red pandas hiding up in trees.

Few exhibits are worth seeing, like the rare red panda and the snow leopard. Otherwise it could have been maintained a whole lot better.

We hired a car to see places in Darjeeling and this zoo was part of that tour. This is a small but well maintained zoo with very interesting breed of animals like the Indian tiger, black leopard, clouded leopard, red panda, yak, to name a few. This is the highest altitude zoo in India and specializes in breeding animals adapted to alpine conditions, and has successful captive breeding programs for the Snow leopard, the critically endangered Himalayan wolf and the Red panda. The texture and movement of the animals proves their healthy nature.
