One of the oldest book store, in chennai, Mount road, opposite to LIC building. It was named after Abel Joshua Higginbotham, a captain who was ejected, from the Madras port, later found an employment as a librarian, where the library was running in loss. He purchased the store, and named it as “HIGGINBOTHAM”. From 1844, it is running successfully till date. There are 2 floors, where ground floor has books related to, fiction, non-fiction, philosophy, travel, history, music and dance, self- development and kids books. First floor, has books for college goers.

Last week after many years, I visited Higginbothams, and purchased couple of books. Lovely ambience. There are staff to guide, when you can’t find a book. There is a separate section for stationery too. A place for book lovers, to visit in Chennai.

A sprawling bookstore housed in a heritage Majestic Building, Higginbothams was established in1874,174 yrs ago by Abel Joshua Higginbothams. This book shop was originally started named Weslyan Book Shop with Abel as it’s librarian,in 1840 by Protestant Missionaries. Suffering heavy losses,Abel, bought over the shop & rechristened it after his name in 1844,to becoming the iconic & legendary name it is today. With its growing success, started publishing books around 1860. Abel went on to become the Sheriff of Madras in 1888 & 1889.

The rush I mentioned in the title is the feeling a good book gives me. Whoosh and I get sucked into its world. I have spent countless hours browsing through books there since I was a teenager. Enid Blyton to the Hardy Boys to James Hadley Chase to Tom Clancy to Wodehouse and everything else under the sun. This book store is just a pale shadow of the one in Madras, nostalgic memories come flooding back of walking up the giant stairway wondering what gem I would walk out with. I suppose this is the kind of nostalgia my parents must've felt upon spotting an electric locomotive back in the '70s-80s and my grandparents must've felt on seeing a diesel bus and their parents must've felt on seeing a cycle and so on and so forth.

A request to all, please visit Higginbotham's before it goes the way of the dodo or the Tasmanian tiger. I shed a tear.

The oldest bookstore of Chennai, which book lover can resist and miss this spot?!! When I went in April the front was under renovation but we could still enter from the back. It's a beautiful building and I'm sure it would look beans after being renovated. It was a bit messy inside as books were a bit mixed and the same one was appearing in different shelves but I felt as if I was on a treasure hunt. Great place!!
