Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

The church is always the best place. But this church is also best for it’s history. I was there during the Good Friday with my family. The overall hospitality of the local people amazed me.

I didn't realize that the tomb of St. Thomas is underneath this church. Visits to this church, Little Mount Caves, and St. Thomas Mount, were fascinating insights into the life of St. Thomas.

Chennai boasts of a number of old and classic churches and the grand San Thome Basilica ranks among the most popular ones in the city. Its a Roman Catholic Church believed to be built over the tomb of St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ. Built originally by the Portuguese, it was later rebuilt by the British.

It's architecture and paintings are beautiful and grand. The premises also has a nice little museum. Its a place that is thronged by people of all religions and is a revered by the Catholic community as an important place of pilgrimage. The Blessed Virgin here is also known as Our Lady of Mylapore.

The church is well connected through various means of transport and is situated very near to the famous Marina Beach.

Its a must visit for anyone visiting the city of Chennai as it is not only a famous religious place but also a shining example of the Neo-Gothic architectural design of a bygone era.

The church here is one of just three built atop the tomb of one of the twelve apostles. The architecture and atmosphere are stunning and awe inspiring. Quiet reflection and prayer is possible on weed days. There is a museum and one can
Also see the relics of the apostle Thomas.

Parking was easy.

Walk around to see the outside of the building as well and take in the Madonna draped in a saree and prepared for a procession.

I went to San Thome Basilica with my family & some of our friends & the church is really big both from the inside & the outside. Painted pure white the church gives you a feeling of peace & also holiness.Out of three, this is one of the churches that are built on the tomb of apostles. The underground church where St.Thomas is resting in peace is small , compared to the church in the front , but it very nicely built. We were greeted & given prayer cards by the Rev. Father. And also there's a very good gift shop where you can buy statues & holy gifts for your loved ones at a reasonable price. Recommend this place to travelers , if you are visiting Chennai.
