Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

“Santhome Cathedral”
Reviewed 26 April 2012

This cathedral is as synonymous with Mylapore as the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Bazaar Road , Dubba Chetty shop or Rayar's Hotel.
It is believed that St Thomas visited this church on his travels in Madras. It is also believed that his remains are buried here. This is one of the three Basilicas built over the tombs of Apostles in the world
This a beautiful place of worship, right by the unending waves of the Bay of Bengal. The masses conducted here are soul - stirring. It is conducted in English as well as Tamil. The timings can be checked on line.
A special mention must be mentioned of the flower arrangements in the Altar. They are absolutely eye - catching!!
There is ample parking space for visitors.
An evening spent here will definitely bring peace to the mind!

“Has aged very well, and has lovely stained glass...”
Reviewed 20 April 2012

Stain glass is excellent, and the entire Cathedral is quite beautiful. Located just south of Ghandi beach, it's worth a stop in. I didn't go into the Shrine, just the Cathedral, as it was oppressively hot and humid, hard to believe it isn't even summer here. But a very lovely Cathedral with several other buildings on the compound.
