“Slipping”
Reviewed 13 February 2012

The cafe is as charming as ever. There is a new Indian place called Kipling masala within the compound now. Loved sitting there under the fan in the shade looking at the greenery. Took some friends there and they were very happy with the setting too.

Now the food - definitely slipping. Same menu perhaps, but not as tasty. Everything seemed more fried than usual. Service has always been slow at Kipling, this time it couldn't have been slower. We were about 8 at the table and the food arrived at different times for different people. Portions are generous, but overall the food part was disappointing.

Have been to Kipling many times and have always had a great time. Hope the owners get their act together and improve food and service soon.

“Awesome ambience!! Perfect for couples...”
Reviewed 24 January 2012

I went to this place around 7.30pm, Its difficult to locate this but on calling the restro staff was really helpful and guided us there.
The food was good bit on the expensive side, but the best part was the ambience. Its very close to the sea so you can feel the breeze, also the hut type seating arrangement, the drapes and the candle light are the add on's.
I recommend this to all the couples.

“Kipling Cafe still best in class in Chennai”
Reviewed 8 January 2012

Kipling Cafe continues to be the best (and almost only) restaurant in Chennai serving in attractive, quiet outdoor ambiance. Food is usually good, sometimes excellent; unfortunately quality varies too much, as typical in Chennai.

We went to Kipling Cafe twice this weekend. On Friday, my wife had marvelous pan-roasted chicken. The skin of the chicken was crispy, meat tender and juicy, and taste was perfect. Definitely one of the best plates we have had in Chennai. If there is anything to complain, the portion was a bit too large - would have been ok without appetizers and desert, though. My pork chop was nice, but nothing to remember. My wife was the luckier one also with dessert, Kipling's pannacotta is very good (though, again, a bit large portion to my liking). My crème brûlée had clearly failed: the consistency was kind of mushy and the surface was not crispy. Fortunately, taste was ok.

We went to Kipling again on Saturday, partly because I wanted to have the marvelous chicken, partly because we were late for lunch and early for dinner, and there aren't that many places who have kitchen open all day. Perhaps that was the reason for disappointing experience, chef not there and some apprentice on duty in the kitchen? Taste of the chicken was the same than on Friday, but nothing else was: no crispiness and overcooked.

Our previous experiences in Kipling Cafe have been mostly very good: their risottos are excellent, pizzas likewise, steaks usually very good (but not always). No disappointments in appetizers.

“Nice food but a littlle pricey; place is difficult to find”
Reviewed 28 December 2011

We went with another 2 families including 4 children. The place was very difficult to find but we finally made it. We ate at a lovely covered table near the kitchen. The service was quick and the food was good quality; some of the dishes were superb esp the mixed kebab platter which was huge and tasty also the biryani special. I would return but will remember next time that hey do not serve alcohol according to government rules so may take a hip flask of suitable beverages !!
