Owner description: If you are looking to soak in the culture of Chennai, the Mylapore Tank and Mandavali area should be at the top of your list. One of the oldest residential parts of Chennai, the tank is a part of the seventh century Kapaleeshwarar Temple. This is also the place where the famous Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar, was born. If you are spending a few days in Chennai, you will understand the importance of this state figure from the number of references made in signs, names of shops and statues. The quintessential travel phrase, "overwhelming sights, sounds, smells," fits perfectly in this area. The narrow streets around the temple are buzzing with activities. Flower sellers, archaic shops selling temple offering ingredients and such line the roads leading to the temple. A photographer’s dream, this place is best explored in the morning, the chosen time to pay homage at the temple.

“Gotta love India”
Reviewed 30 March 2012

I love wandering around Indian towns - the best people watching ever. Everyone is super friendly and there are loads of shops and stalls to have a good root around and bring back some souvenirs. I bought 20 little terracota oil burners for the princely sum of about 20p, lovely lady wanted to give me money off as I had bought so many. I do love India!

“Crowds”
Reviewed 23 March 2012

Do. Not. Go. Here. unless you REALLY want to visit the (very famous) temple situated here. And then, only if you want a really Really BIG miracle.

Its crazily crowded with virtually no parking spaces, narrow streets and Auto drivers that charge the moon for even the shortest trips.

“I am emotionally attached to this place...”
Reviewed 19 March 2012

When I think of my childhood it is Mylapore - The Marina Beach, Kapaleeswarar Temple, Sai Baba Temple, Kesava Perumal Temple, Madhava Perumal Temple, Kamadhenu Theater, Kabali Theater, Rex Fashions, Aavin Cone Ice Cream, G.N.Rao, Bhagawan Tea Stall, P.S.High School ground, RK Mutt, Sharadha Devi Temple, Mylapore Market, Karpagambal Mess, Rayar's cafe...I am getting nostalgic...What more one can ask for. I don't know how many of them would have enjoyed this place as much as I did...
