“Nice Hotel, Different Era, Good location”
Reviewed 13 December 2011

The hotel at the first sight takes you back to 1960's or 70's, nice large location, airy rooms, common balcony/verandah, close by to city centre. There are actually rules and regulations for guests framed and put up inside the wardrobe which probably was written about 25 years back. Nice rooms, prompt service, courteous staff, good vegetarian food. The hotel can certainly do with upkeep and making it more dated but guess that would raise the costs as well. I would recommend the hotel for short stay, family or business trip, but importantly it would be recommeded if you wish to spend more time outside the hotel than within it and treat the hotel only as a place to sleep at night during your travel period

Room Tip: Take a room on a higher floor, their non AC double rooms are good, costs approx INR 2000 per night i...

The place was strictly average, nothing to write home about. My friend and I visited this place in August for US Visa interview. This hotel is located a stone's throw away from the Visa consulate, so there are no worries since the consulate can be reached by walk in 5 minutes. We travelled by air, so this place was quite far away from the airport. We had booked an A/C room for 1 night. When we came into the reception lobby, there was just 1 guy manning the bookings and we were made to wait for half an hour to get the room keys, inspite of making a reservation some days back. However, dinner was quite good and the room service was quite efficient. Even the next day's lunch that we ordered after finishing our Visa interview, was quite tasty. Cleanliness is slightly above average but I wouldn't call it great. Moreover, one of the taps in the bathroom was not functioning properly.

When we vacated the room, some 4-5 bellboys started hounding us for tips in the presence of the receptionists, which felt a bit awkward. Apart from that, no other complaints.

Overall, I would say visit this place if you are looking for a budget hotel when you go for US VISA interviews. but don't expect any frills at this place. It has a decent vegetarian restaurant but that's about it. And do try to opt for the A/C rooms, they are better than the non-A/C ones.

Room Tip: Opt for the slightly costlier A/C rooms instead of the non-A/C ones

We had to go to Chennai, for the US Visa interview. We had made enquiries from frienda and family, who hadpreviously been to Chennai. Most of them recommended Palmgrove Hotel, mainly because of its location to the US Embassy. One can walk the distance, hence doesn't lose time in reaching the venue. (when you look at the traffic and road blocks in Chennai)

We had made the booking ahead of our arrival in Chennai. So on our arrival, the rooms were available. We preferred Non Ac rooms, but when making the booking itself they said that there were no Non Ac rooms available, which I am not sure was the reality.

But the good hing here was that the Hotel belonged to a person from my Native-mangalore. So they spoke our language. We were welcomed and the helpers in the hotel were more than eager to carry our luggage(though not required since we had trolley bags). But for them they wanted the Tips. Breakfast was complimentary. A good spread was served - buffet.

Rooms were clean, but not that great. Price wise a little expensive is what I feel. Or else, a good and convenient place to stay if you are visiting Chennai for your US Visa.

I have been staying at the Palm Grove regularly since 2009.
The AC Deluxe rooms at around Rs. 2,500 is real value for money considering that the hotel is so centrally located. A stones throw from Gemini Over bridge and the US Consulate.
The rooms on the 3rd and 4th floor have numbers starting with 4 and 5. I prefer the rooms starting with 4 for example 404, 405 etc. The rooms are large and have a small anteroom in the front and a nice big balcony at the rear.

An effective window AC delivers adequate cooling and has a remote for those who like to lounge on the bed and command the AC. There are plenty of electrical sockets so you can charge your phone, lap-top and camera at the same time. Unlike many pricy hotels you have bright ambient lighting thanks to a fluorescent light on one wall. There is a small empty refrigerator in the corner and it is put on when you check in. You can bring your own water and juices and

Two limp carpets on the floor are a let down but the linen is always bright and clean, They give you two tiny soaps and two rough but clean Turkish towels. They never put a toilet paper roll in the toilet unless you ask for it. And yes they have a sanitary flush at the commode.
and the bathroom is huge. A massive two step corner bath tub occupies one side of it. A great place to sit and scrub your feet. They have wall mounted fans in the toilet and it really helps drying off after a shower.

They give you enough hangers and there is adequate room in the wardrobe to put out all your clothes. Laundry is outsourced - Kumar the laundry guy gives good service at a very reasonable cost. A shoe cleaner rings your bell every morning.

A decent complementary breakfast is served and the restaurant staff are all quite friendly. They talk in loud tones though but that is a Chennai characteristic. The hotel has a an outsourced store, a barber and a travel desk.

Palm Grove is a popular venue for weddings and sometimes the lawns can get a bit noisy. But for people watchers it is fun to look down from the balcony at traditionally dressed guests and the hapless bride and groom on the stage. Enthusiastic musicians and crescendos on the Tabla may however keep you awake if you are a light sleeper. The remedy is of course to visit the bar opposite the reception.

Te hotel serves only veg food. Never try their Pizzas and their Chinese food is horrendous - probably made by the dosa cook. Luckily there are several good eating places nearby,

A south india treat with a comfort of the ambience and centrally located. Food is awesome esp the morning breakfast. So to say the pongal delicacies. Lunch is the most happening event with elaborate preparation and sumptuous food.. You can never forget the mouth-watering dishes. On top of it, it is very affordable and does not picnh your purse !
