Our stay was very brief and the last minute rooms we got were not the best. But we could see other rooms later, experience the hospitality, chat with the hostesses and have breakfast, which got us to arrive at the high recommendation.

It's a home stay built in a palatial house of a general and maintained by his three daughters, full of paintings, nick knacks, collectibles, memorabilia, racks full of books, cosy corners, sun-lit balconies and about 10 rooms (only some with a view). There is a large lawn up front where you can sit and read in the company of birds, peacock and squirrels. We ate a breakfast, which was made to our order and quite good. The staff is unobtrusive, polite and helpful. Our rooms were basic but the others we saw the next day were nicely done up and had more character. There is free wifi.

If you go here (and you must) go with some time on your hand,

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor are definitely better and have better views.

It's clean, it's comfortable and it has an old world charm. The attention to detail, the garden and the peocock just added to the ambience. A perfect homestay!

It has basic amenities and the food was home-cooked. Stay here if you don't wish to stay at the any of the overpriced chains.

Something about living out of home stays. Nice and tidy rooms, fresh linen, decent amenities, breakfast. Loved the decor and eye for detail.
A very friendly and welcoming hostess. Shared the morning tea, had a small chat, got compliments on my skin *blush*

Sure to return for the warmth

The generals retreat is a cross between a B&B and a Homestay. The rooms are in a house that belonged to a general so immediately you get a behind the scenes view of all those grand houses you drive past in India wondering what they are like inside. It is a calm in the chaos of Jaipur with a gorgeous garden where you can sit and read while the resident peacock and squirrels keep you company. We ate dinner at the house both nights we were here and the food was the best we have had in India so far (because it was home cooked). Though 450 rupees a person may seem a bit expensive we were given 3 dishes each night with lots of roti and dessert. The staff are polite and helpful. The rooms are basic but clean. The free wifi was great. The only downside is the house is on a busy road and during the day you can hear the traffic and beeping horns though at night it was fine.
