“The Royal Observatory of Jaipur”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2012

The astronomical observatory without telescopes was built by the then Raja Jai Singh and is one of the best maintained of the five observatories he built in India even though the Jantar Mantar at New Delhi is in a much larger area and has some very large instruments too. See the different zodiacal constellations and their observational instruments all positioned in the centre of the observatory area. There is a nice bookshop at the exit gate and they sell some lovely though pretty expensive books, postcards, magnets, etc. There is a small kiosk where you get bottled water and cold drinks.

“get a guide”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2012

otherwise they'll be just a lot of very odd looking buildings. Our guide was really informative (and we tried to avoid most guides as they can go on a bit if youre tight on time and overcharge!) and I'm pleased we had him if only for 20mins to explain how the structures work - they are amazing and photographically its a very cool place to visit.

“Wow”

Liked this place a lot and made for some really cool pictures. No guide for this place (the guides are ok, but I preferred to go at my own pace and take pictures). Historic, legend, grok!

“Perplexing audio guide = great confusion”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2012

What should have been a interesting visit was not due the awful audio guide (and yet they have always been so good at other places throughout India). Astrology is a complicated subject at the best of times and coupled with a huge array of large fixed astrological instruments requires clear and concise explanation. That was sorely lacking. What you get is a garbled narrative that assumes knowledge with explanations that require a degree in mathematics. The narrative devise of using a father explaining the instruments to his daughter whilst cute, only served to annoy me as this infant's seeming capacity for understanding consistently out surpassed mine.  This veritable outdoor Aladon's  cave unfortunately remained a mystery to me.
