“Felt more in touch with the city than the more anonymous chain hotels”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2012

We stayed in the Samode Haveli last year and would thoroughly recommend it. The hotel is beautiful with either the most ornate decorations or paintings in the older style rooms or, as in the more modern room we were given, a larger suite with bedroom, large lounge, dining room and private courtyard. Location is just great, tucked away inside the city walls yet still quiet enough not to be bothered by noise. We ate in the restaurant on each night, not through lack of adventure but because we were generally worn out after very hectic days. The food was really good, wide choice and well cooked. There is an indoor restaurant but we took all but one of our meals in the courtyard. We wanted to make the best of our simply gorgeous room so asked for room service one evening. The people in the hotel could not have been more helpful and the quality of food remained as high as other nights. As with some other reviewers, we also stayed in the Oberoi in Agra before coming here. It is obviously not up to the incredible standards of the Oberoi but then we only paid a fraction of the price. For us, this was a different type of experience for a very reasonable amount and we felt more in touch (although still well cosseted) with the city than we would have done in some of the more anonymous international chain hotels.

We spent 2 days in this hotel and we had a very good experience. Huge room with a fantastic bathroom, very quite. Good sized swimming pool and very good spa facilities with free steaming room. At nite you can dine in the hotel restaurant which is very charming and romantic. Staff always friendly and helpfull, I would strongly recommend it.,

Having stayed at the Imperial in Delhi and Oberoi in Agra, we were quited spoiled and had high expectations when coming to Samode Haveli. The impression was not that good though - the place is quite run down and is in dire need of renovation. I wouldn't call this a luxury hotel, and it shouldn't be priced like that. Paint is falling from the walls and it's not as clean and well maintained as it should be. It's a pity, because the building has a lot of potential and could be very beautiful with the right maintenance. I know it's very old, 250 years or so, but that puts maintenance even higher on the priority.

We had a Haveli Suite, nr 111, and it was huge, two stories. It was a rather awkward staircase to the second floor though, so we never used the bottom floor and it was actually kind of a waste. The room was not bad, but comparing to the impeccable details in other hotels we had experienced in the trip, it really didn't feel more than average. Thick screen TV and no Wifi in the room.

Service was also quite so-so, and the helpers were hawking for tips all the time.

The good things about the hotel is the pool area which is beautiful and looks quite well maintained, and the dining room is also beautiful with it's old paintings on the walls and roof.

All in all, we were so disappointed that we cancelled the last night out of three and went back to Delhi earlier to stay at the Imperial instead.

If you get this hotel for a very low price it can be worth it, but otherwise, look elsewhere.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for staying at Samode Haveli and I apologize that you did not find the Haveli to your expectation. I am glad that you liked the pool area and the paintings in the dining room. Those paintings are actually more than 300 years old and the Haveli Suite that you stayed is of the same era. Caring for a Heritage property is wonderful but it is extremely challenging. The family owning the Haveli have put in a lot of effort to convert it into a beautiful hotel.
Thank you once again for your feedback and we look forward to your visit again to Jaipur and Samode Haveli.

with regards

The approach to this hotel belies the splendour that lies beyond the driveway leading to the palace. The hotel really is quite beautiful, from the quirky entrance (up a grand flight of steps) into a lovely courtyard.

A warm welcome greeted us upon arrival and we were shown to very large and impressive rooms. There are no lifts (elevators) in this hotel and rooms are spread around various buildings on various levels.

Note: WiFi is ONLY available in the seating area around the courtyard. There is NO WiFi in any of the rooms. But it is free :)

The rooms are well equipped with all the niceties one would expect from a hotel of this calibre.

The dining room is quite magnificent with its decorated walls and ceiling.

What I found to be a little disappointing was the lack of attention to detail in certain areas. My bathroom was large and quite elegant with a separate slipper bath and large shower cubicle. Marble slabs adorned the walls. Whilst standing in the shower I noticed faint writing on the marble which, without my glasses, looked like graffiti. I then noticed more graffiti on other marble slabs around the bathroom and, on closer inspection, discovered it was actually pencil marks denoting which room and location the slabs were meant for - why could they not have cleaned this off after the marble was installed?! Also the slipper bath, whilst looking quite elegant, was made of lightweight acrylic and not fixed to the floor properly - a little dangerous possibly?!

As a result of arriving in Jaipur with a rather bad case of food poisoning I didn't dine in the restaurant of a lunchtime or evening. I did take breakfast one two mornings and, to be honest, wasn't particularly impressed - I'd say that the breakfast offering was fairly average.

The staff were helpful, polite and friendly but somewhat disorganised at times.

Overall a lovely hotel and certainly a great place to stay but some attention to detail and an improvement on the breakfast fare is in order.

An amazing beautiful hotel in a fascinating area of India! The staff were exceptional (more about that below), and the room they gave us was fit for a king and queen.

The grounds in general were well-kept and a pleasure to walk around. The pool area was luxurious, and the dining room was astounding. The food in both places was excellent. The lounge area next to the courtyard was also a wonderful place to sit.

Unfortunately, we got word of a death in the family and we had to make arrangements to go back home. The telephone in our room didn't work, so the staff at the front desk were kind enough to let us use theirs. They gave us glasses of water and offered advice on the best way to get back to New Delhi. Their kindness was very much appreciated.

We also had to notify friends and family through email, so we were very thankful for their air-conditioned computer room.

Thanks again to the staff for a wonderful (if short) stay at the Samode Haveli!!!

Room Tip: Any room there would be a treat!
