“Dont stay here”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2012

This could be a lovely hotel with some management changes.
This hotel is only interested in tour groups.
The reception staff were surly at best. On check in the reception staff were only just polite.
I questioned a problem with the wifi I had bought [no fee wifii as in many hotels of this price range have] and they snapped at me and told me it was my problem !!! [Great customer service NOT]
There are actually 2 restaurants at the hotel, but the staff dont mention the small Indian restaurant in a corner of the garden. It was the best thing about the place. It was quite and the food was lovely as were the staff.
We went to the main restaurant for lunch and there was a squabble between the staff who was going to serve us. The staff really need to be sorted out. The waiting staff only JUST do their job.
Housekeeping went to lunch after servicing our room and left the key on a chair outside the room. Reception staff didn't know where the key was [I found it] When I asked the housekeeping person why he left it there he said he wanted his lunch. he had no idea of the implications. The [I presume] housekeeping manager in a very tatty uniform came to see what the problem was and he didn't get it either, but made a very quirt apology.
It was too cold to swim, but even though there are nets over the pool it was filled with dirty pigeons and those that weren't in the pool were sitting on the netting [one with its leg caught. it lived for the 2 days we were there] above. Nice looking pool but not clean.
The room was OK if basic and the shower was good.
I read on other reviews the negative comments about the reception staff and still it hasn't improved. poor management I would suggest.
Best part was leaving and I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

Indeed, very special is the city palace and the famous observatory. The rooms could be better, but the location was very nice and quiet. Service could be better.

I had read the comments before going there and was kind of expecting the worst, it was our second hotel on this trip to India after our terrible New Delhi experience, and we were gladilly suprised :)

The staff was not arrogant nor ignoring, they were really nice (although the reception staff can seem a bit "careless" at times).
But anything we asked we had in the next 5 to 10min, problem with the sink that we did not know how to use properly or with the shower since we could not find the hot water button.

The room was big, nice and very clean, the bathroom was huge, which was funny since there were a lot of unused space.

The breakfast was nice, the western restaurant we did not try, but the indian one was one of the best we've had ! Spicy though not "burning hot" for our western taste, and defenitely the best Gulab Jamun we ever ate !!!!

About the puppet show, the guy is really nice, and if you talk a few minutes with him he travelled a lot around the world. Yes he askes you if you have foreign coins for his kids, but who cares ? It makes them happy and for us it's nothing to give away 50cents.

Location wise, it's very suprising, you are in a very crowded and noisy street and suddenly at the end of a narrow alley ou have a quiet haven.
You don't hear the sound of the street, only of the "puppet show" but this ends around 11pm anyway.

One comment : I would not recommend the swimming pool either... The whole pigeons looking over your head while bathing is not really tempting.

Dear Guest, We are glad to know that you had a satisfying stay with us. Our food is definitely a strong point and we are happy to learn that you enjoyed our Indian restaurant. The pigeons above the pool are really a problem and we are trying our best to do something about it.

Stayed here two nights as part of a small group (12 people) tour. Hotel quite well located about 500m from Chanderpol Gate and therefore a short tuk-tuk ride or 20 mins walk from the Observatory and City Palace Museum. Fairly quiet spot, but get a room as high and as far away from the road as possible! Mosque nearby will probably wake you at sunrise anyway! Rooms OK – a bit faded, but clean and fairly spacious.
Hotel staff friendly and helpful. Restaurant had a good dinner buffet and breakfast was pretty good too.

Room Tip: As far from the road as poss. Go for something 300 for the third floor.

The staff here are unhelpful at best, and the location is on the outskirts of the city. We were taken here after initially booking at hotel shappora, and this hotel is clearly inferior.

Dear Guest, we are sorry to learn that you were not happy with our hotel and found it located on the outskirts of the town. Mandawa Haveli is located within a kilometre or two of the old city and all major sightseeing spots are within driving distance of 10 - 15 mins..If you give us the opportunity of serving you again we will make sure you have an extremely comfortable stay with us.
