“Ladli Vocational Training Centre IS Making a Difference!”
Reviewed 28 April 2011

Having now visited Ladli Vocational Training Centre twice over the space of the last year, I am blown away by the work that the team at i-india are doing with these children. Ladli offers abused, abandoned and orphaned children a safe haven, providing them with vocational training to make jewellery and craft items, education, basic health care, computer lessons, a full cooked meal each day and a fair-trade wage for their work. These children would otherwise be on the streets, rag picking, labouring, begging or in prostitution.

During both of my visits over the space of 1 year, I have found Ladli to be a very special place that truly looks after these children. The children are well mannered and contented with their studies. Between classes they convene in the central courtyard to play with their friends as well as eat their lunch.

Please be mindful that local tour guides, taxi and auto drivers will often deter you from visiting Ladli, as Ladli refuse to pay them commission for bringing tourists to their door and as such tour guides prefer to guide their tourists to more profitable locations…

Jaipur truly is a beautiful city, with its rich offering of forts, palaces, and posh hotels! Please take a couple of your precious hours to gain some perspective! Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody!?

“A real win-win”
Reviewed 21 February 2011

Have you ever felt that you want to help someone on a one-to-one basis, without a bunch of professional fund raisers and salaried "administrators" taking a cut. This is your chance to have some positive impact and to come away with the feeling that you have added something good to the lives of some children that deserve all the help you can give them. Ladli is trying to rescue kids from living out their lives on the streets. They educate them and they teach them trades. You can't help being charmed by the kids and impressed by the sincerity of the teachers. When you buy a piece of jewelry or key fob or wine bottle holder made by the kids of Ladli you are buying a one-of-a-kind item at a very low price, with a wonderful story attached. Try it. You'll love the feeling. Not only that; the people on your gift list will love the items.
A word of caution, Ladli is not exactly in an upscale area. If you take a taxi, don't pay the driver until you leave, because if he leaves without you there won't be another taxi along very soon. If you are traveling with a guide, don't let him discourage you. My guide had never been to Ladli. In fact, he had never heard of it. But by the time we left, he had noted it in his book and I know he will bring other tourists to this off the beaten track spot.

“Visit a place that is doing something good for Jaipur's street children”
Reviewed 24 September 2010

There are a hundred thousand street children in Jaipur, and for us it was pretty hard to enjoy the palaces and ayurvedic massages with that level of poverty and desperation in front of our eyes. If you end up feeling the same way, go visit Ladli.

They rescue street kids, girls sold into prostitution and other orphans they find, house them, feed even more of them, and teach them how to make jewelry. Their focus is not on a meal and a blanket, but rather on preparation for adulthood, vocational training and steps to teach the children how to enter the working world and get beyond their situation. Every child, even the homeless ones are required to have savings accounts for part of the money they earn at a bank!

They welcome guests and will come pick you up at your hotel. (apparently in the past people have asked cabs to take them there, only to be taken somewhere else to a jewelry store with a few children and told it's Ladli, so they would rather come get you).

Go visit and see their facility near Bani Park, meet the kids who have been rescued, and buy a bracelet or necklace made by the kids. Their products are first rate and what a great gift to your friends back home, plus you get to see something good and hopeful going on amidst all that hardship. Maybe you will even get inspired. Other visitor in the past have gone home and created new marketing materials for them, etc. I asked because the brochure is decidedly un-Indian.

At the time of my visit, they were housing 175 children and feeding and training 2500 more that still slept on the streets. That leaves another approximately 95,000 homeless orphans in Jaipur waiting for services. You will see them everywhere. This is one way you can help them.
