This is my Sunday breakfast place and there is nothing that I like more on Sunday morning- the pessaratu is special and no one minds the wait and queue - oops I am getting hungry again -the price very middle class - not be missed in Mumbai
as a tam, i feel there are better places for a good dosa / sambar around matunga. cafe madras is hyped and we have come out disappointed repeatedly.
the sambar, chutney is not that great... ambience average like any of these other places... the crowds a lot.. left us wondering for what!
Another institution in Mumbai which has been catering to the rich and poor folks alike and winning awards every year !! A non Ac joint, which has not been painted in years but has customers waiting for hours every day - worse in weekends. BMWs and Mercs line up outside and so do cycles etc. and the food is the best you can get in Mumbai... at a price that makes up for the petrol you will spend in reaching there.
Located in the south indian hub of Mumbai - Matunga, their dosas, upmas & vadas are to die for. A large variety of these that too ... coupled with south indian coffee and Pineapple sheera makes it an experience to cherish. Upma Poori and other exotic items are not found anywhere else and is highly recommended.
The only prob is that service can be poor in the seating area above and in the summers, eating there can be an ordeal. But we cannot avoid it ...
This place is not missed by anyone who crosses King Circle for a weekend trip or even for Sunday walk. For all matunga-ites its a place for a breakfast or light snacks just after your classes or a movie.
Must try list - rasam / sambhar idli... mysore masal.. onion uttappa...with the typical south indian chutney pudi as they call it. If you are not conscious you can try their upma and sheera.
The filter coffee is all you need to get started for the day, hot and brewing fresh you cannot miss on the aroma around cafe madras. If you are lucky you even get pampered by the way its served - authentic south indian style of filter coffee is not had without mixing and getting the froth right.
For all who want a little taste of the southern India... Cafe Madras it is!
