“3 nights at Ascot Hotel”
Reviewed 5 March 2012

We stayed at the Ascot Hotel in Mumbai for 3 nights February 2012 and were very pleased about the hotel. The hotel only has 3 stars, but if you can live in Mumbai without a pool this is a good hotel. It was very nice and clean, the receptionists are more or less fluent in English and the location is perfect for tourists. The breakfast is made on your order, but the selection could have been better, thus the breakfast was not very exciting, but okay.

We have not stayed in other Mumbai hotels earlier, but this hotel is better than 4 star hotels we have stayed at in other parts of India.

My friend had booked one night at the Ascot in October 2011, paid for the night and had received confirmation for Sunday 29 January. We flew into Mumbai mid morning and took sometime to organise a taxi. It then took over an hour to arrive at the Ascot. To add to this the driver got himself lost. Finally - we were at our destination - the Ascot in Mumbai! We were anxious to get ourselves checked in and then leave for India Gate to catch a ferry to Elephant Is. as we didn't know what time the last ferry left.
We walked up to the Reception counter where three men stood, the middle of the three was on the phone. I told the gentleman nearest to us what our names were and my friend explained that we had a booking and attempted to show him the paperwork but he was clearly not interested. He gave us an embarrassed smile and looked in the direction of the gentleman on the phone. Eventually the man on the phone ended his conversation and began telling us that there were no rooms. It was only a small hotel and the people who were in our room last night had stayed on. I asked him to tell them to leave as we had booked that room. 'No', he couldn't do that as they had medical problems and they had left early this morning for the hospital. So I suggested he take their belongings and put them in safe keeping until they returned, but 'No' he couldn't do that.It was very obvious he had no intention of giving us a room.
"However, he did have a room in another hotel from the same chain........' We asked if it was far away as we had to get to India gate'. 'No, it is much closer etc etc'. We had to ask for a taxi as clearly they weren't about to organise a taxi for us, but we insisted that they pay. So a small taxi arrived with no room for our luggage, so we sat cramped in the back seat with heavy cases on our laps (and my friend had fractured ribs) with the remainder of the luggage piled high in the front which limited the driver's vision. Before getting in to the taxi my friend walked back into the reception area and there were the three men laughing... and as others have obviously experienced they had not once said sorry as they were about to dump us into their one star hotel two streets away. Needless to say - the room was shocking but we left our baggage and at least were happy to find that we were in fact quite close to India Gate.
When we returned home, my friend wrote to the 'Booking Company' who contacted the Ascot. The Ascot claimed that we had arrived too early (1p.m.) and because we wanted to go to India Gate, we couldn't wait for a room- so we went to the other hotel instead - such lies. If we had arrived early we would have been more than happy to leave our bags with the conciege. Isn't that what happens at all hotels????? BUT this was NEVER suggested. Furthermore ,they didn't even know we were going to India Gate until after they told us we would have to go to the other 1 star hotel.... I cannot review the rooms as we never got to see them. However the staff we encountered and the service we received does not even rate - so I suggest everyone avoid the Ascot as confirmed bookings mean nothing apparently. This happens regularly one supposes from other reviews - so don't even contemplate the Ascot.

Room Tip: Don't choose any rooms. Don't even go to the hotel.

We stayed at this small hotel in Colaba for three nights at the end of a 9 week trip. The staff was great....very friendly and helpful with directions, advice and restaurant recommendations. The hotel is in a great location to visit many attractions, restaurants and shopping on foot. The room was extremely clean and comfortable. We had reserved a deluxe room but it was not available on check in. The room we got was perfectly fine. They showed us a deluxe room the next day and offered it to us but we decided to stick with the one we had. There is definitely some road noise (mostly honking) but that quiets down by around 11 pm. I would suggest taking a room facing the back of the hotel if you are a light sleeper.
We will definitely come back to this hotel when we find ourselves in Mumbai again. It's good value for the location and the service exceeded our expectations.

the hotel is central, in a nice, green and quiet street of colaba. - a good joice for a trip to mumbai.

most interesting things to see are just a walk away- museums, the taj, art galleries, markets, the marine drive,... great restaurants and bars just around the corner ("koyla" - a rooftop restaurant just 1 minute away- is highly recommended!!!).
if you like longer walks- wander along the marine drive up to chowpatti beach for sunset! many people, good vibe, seabreeze and a orange-pink sun behind the mumbai-skyline! just amazing.

most of all its important for us to mention the friendly, caring staff at ascot!
we forgot something very important to us in our room, went to south india by plane, came back to mumbai after 2 weeks and menesis from the reception managed it in such a polite and friendly way -by many phonecalls and efforts- to get it back to us at the international airport before we left india for austria... thank you so much for that!!!

also during our stay everybody was very nice, the breakfast was good, free wifi,...
can`t recommend it more!
