“not 4 star...”
Reviewed 23 July 2008

Problem with this hotel was that the airport transfer I had pre-booked and reconfirmed did not arrive at the airport, which meant my night time arrival was more stressful than i wanted it to be. The hotel could not care less about this, disputed that I had pre-booked a transfer, even when I showed them emails and gave them the name of the person I had spoken to. The hotel itself is in a nice area but very small ( this is what they mean when they call it a "boutique hotel" on the web site! ) Food is good, facilities ( fitness centre and business centre) are poor. Mumbai is an expensive city for decent hotels. This hotel would have been a three star in Europe. It's ok, but dont expect luxury even if you are paying a "luxury" price.

The Shalimar is a nice hotel, but this was the second time I stayed there in the last 2 months and they have done the same fiddle two times in a row. I was on a business trip with another colleague. Our travel manager had booked and confirmed two rooms for a night. When we landed up there we were told that they had only one room, so could we please share the room. At 11 in the night you are hardly in any shape to go look for another hotel. There was another group of five people who landed up at the hotel and evidently all had single rooms booked for them but were being cajoled into sharing two rooms!!

We decided that if two of us are traveling then next time we will book four rooms, so that hopefully get a room each.

Stayed for 2 nights while visiting an exhibition in Mumbai and as hotels near the airport are very expensive, have to resort to stay away from the airport which is closer to the exhibition ground.

Have to say that the rooms are expensive at about USD220 with breakfast but then again for a business hotel, this is a reasonable rate compared to those international chain. The hotel has been around for 47 years but has progressively renovated over the years and this can be reflected in the clean and well maintained rooms. Honestly speaking, I cannot find any major flaws with the hotel except the noisy streets if your room is near to the main street like mine. You cannot get to sleep till 12 midnight and are almost up by 6:00 am. The other disadvantage about this place is the expensive internet charges you need to fork out. The cost for the internet prepaid card is priced at 300 Rs but as this is provided through the hotel, you have to pay 562 Rs, tried looking for shops outside the hotel for the prepaid card but was not successful. This is probably the 2 fault I can find with this hotel.

Location wise, it is located near Kemps Corner and at the foot from the road leading to Hanging Garden which to me is nothing spectacular. There is also a supermarket, Apetite, which is like 5 -7 mins walk away which you can stock up on drinks and snacks. Just round the corner is also a major bookstore, Crossroads that provide good selection of books as well as a decent cafe on the 2nd floor offering decent sandwiches. Other than that, did not venture much as was in the hotel at night. The nearest shopping mall, Atria, in Worli is about 15-20 mins drive away by cab depending on road conditions.

Getting to the airport is a night mare as on the night I left, it took me close to 2 hours to reach the airport because of the bad traffic jam and even getting to Colaba is like also 20 mins away.

Coming back to the service, I have to say it is excellent as the staff was efficient though service was slow which I believe is the norm in India. Fantastic service was provided by the front desk staff, Santamaria, who allow me to have a quick shower despite that I have already checked out in the morning before my flight back home.

The room that I had is quite spacious that comes with an air con as well as a ceiling fan (without speed control) and the channels provided are good and in fact I managed to have 2 Cantonese channels on my first night but not on the second night due to weak signal.

The breakfast is mostly Indian fare though it comes with toast and an egg order. Had dinner twice in the restaurant which serve good Indian fare. There is also a sandwich bar just behind the reception with pastries as well.

Overall this is an excellent hotel which I would recommend to visitors (both tourists and business travel) if you like to be near Central Mumbai.

OK, so I'm a year late on this posting, but I've been meaning to put the good word in for my friends at Shalimar. Let's start with the basics--Mumbai doesn't have a spectrum of hotels. There are over-the-top luxury hotels which start at $350/night and there are backpacker's accommodations which can be as low as $25/night. Shalimar is one of the limited mid-range options and if that is your target price/standard, it is unlikely to disappoint you.

Firstly, it is exquisitely clean. This is not something that can be taken for granted in any city, but particularly one with an estimated 30 million people. I was there on business, so I wasn't as willing to compromise cleanliness as much as I would have if I was just backpacking. Secondly, the concierge and staff are extremely friendly and always willing to help you make dinner, travel, touring reservations, etc. Thirdly, it is located in Breach Candy, which is one of the nicer neighborhoods in the heart of Mumbai. If you look at a map, it is just northeast of Chowpatty Beach. Full disclosure--it is not walking distance from the downtown tourist sites, but the cab rides are very inexpensive. Finally, the food--breakfast is delicious and has many options (though if you can drink Indian coffee you're a better person than I). For lunch and dinner, the restaurant and room service have an exhaustive menu of indian and western fare. I had a few really bad days of digestive problems and the hotel pasta saved my life.

Next time I'm in India I'll probably be just passing through Mumbai, and I can afford the $350-a-nighters for a few days, but I'll probably still stay at Shalimar because I believe in loyalty to those who provide excellent service.
