“Excellent shopping”
Reviewed 4 May 2012

You must bargain as they see tourists coming. Do not give money to beggars and do not let them con you to buy them milk for their children as they sell it back to the shops. Also, if you help one, there will be as many as 20 who do not leave you alone and it is not safe.

“The vibrant heart of Mumbai...”
Reviewed 3 May 2012

Noisy traffic, faceless crowds, crowded pavements, jostling hawkers, fish-n-sea smell and splashes of colour fighting to brighten the stern stone faces of Victorian buildings. This may describe pretty much any seaside town in India, but Colaba in south Mumbai offers you Mumbai, India and much more on a plate.

Here is where you will find people of every nation, much like Times Square in New York, ambling along the cobbled pavements, inspecting shawls, slippers, dresses, lamps, jewelry and bags as much as the crammed menu cards slipped under glass top tables at the famous cafes that line the streets. And when you are tired of haggling, or just want to rest your sore heels, head to the sea-side in front of the Taj Palace Hotel and gulp in the fresh sea breeze as you gaze across the little bobbing boats and the sweeping arch of the majestic Gateway of India.
Need a quick bite, or a watering hole? Just saunter into Leopold's Cafe or Cafe Mondegar for a quick beer on tap and a long yap with a perfect yet welcoming stranger. Hungry? Churchill or Woodside Inn will fill you up with wholesome meals, and you can polish off a few moist and melty brownies at Theobroma. If you are inclined towards the arts, the Gallery of Modern Art, Jehangir Art Gallery and the Museum are within 10 mins walking distance. And for the adventurous souls, if the afternoon sun hasn't sapped you, take a boat ride from the Gateway, cruise along the coast, or right up to Elephanta where you can explore some really old cave sculptures. You can even cross over to Kihim for a quieter beach experience, and maybe even a sandy massage!

Dress comfortably, pack light, put on your walking shoes, and keep your plans open. Who knows, maybe the best adventure of your life is itching to start right here, in Colaba, just around the next bend...

“Colaba Causeway”
Reviewed 1 May 2012

Colaba Causeway is a must on a visit to Mumbai - crowded, bustling, loads of street vendors, hundreds of small shops - fabric, clothing, shoes, jewellery - as well as restaurants, like to famous (justifiably) Leopolds - go there for Chicken Tikka!! All within walking distance of the Gateway to India and the magnificent Taj Mahal Hotel.
