“Pure Luxury”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2012

Fantastic stay, pure luxury. Staff treated us like royalty. Stayed in the Tower with a room overlooking the gateway to India, magnificent.

Iconic hotel in the best location (maybe not best location for business though as traffic is crazy in Mumbai). The view on the Gate of India at sunset or sunrise is breathtaking. Lots of charm! Wonderful atmosphere! The pool is simply beautiful! Service is impeccable!
The rooms in the Tower need to be refurbished! Quite old, so if you can afford it, choose a newly-renovated room in the old part of the hotel (avoid the tower). Great trendy shops just few streets away. Choose to have breakfast by the pool (only few tables). Great spa - worth the price, unlike many luxury hotels! I always stay in this hotel and I simply love it!

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is reason enough to visit Mumbai. However entering the palatial portals of this icon of luxury and spendour does not have prepare you for the exquisite high tea you can enjoy upstairs. Remeber to ask for the dainties prepared for you by your waiter while you sip your tip. They are separate from the buffet. I could dine on this high tea for the rest of my life. If you have money to spare don't miss the jewelry shop downstairs. The diamond cut is different but exotic and wonderful and the most marvelous memento of your trip to India.

Room Tip: Go for a room overlooking the bay.

If this is first time to Mumbai for business or any other reason, you must stay at the Taj Hotel. I have stayed at the taj 15-20 times. Request one of the newly renovated rooms in the heratige wing which is the orig part of hotel before the towers were added in in 1970's. This hotel is what other five star hotels strive to be. It is not fancy but rather a luxury that feels comfortable. You can imagine how life must have been in India for the upper class pre-1950's. Once behind the walls of the taj, it feels like a world away from the large city that is just outside. The breakfast buffet is the best I have ever had anywhere in the world.

We decided to splurge and stay at the Taj Palace due to its iconic status for its history and service. It was the inconsistent service which we found slightly disappointing. Our arrival started off well with a complimentary upgrade to the Palace wing but then went downhill when the put us in the empty lounge for 25 mins without any information. An offer of tea came only after someone came in to check on us after 15 mins but the tea did not arrive (later brought to our room). Nor did they give us any information on the hotels services when we checked in (ie. lounge use, breakfast locations options) Among other issues was when given the name and neighbourhood of another Mumbai hotel, the concierge was unable to locate on the Internet (subsequent Self search easily found). Despite these minor complaints which are admittedly due to our high expectations because of its reputation, and price, the staff were friendly and polite. (Note: Received superior service at other less expensive 5 star hotels). The hotel is unrivaled for its location, the interiors are beautiful, and the rooms comfortable. It did offer some amenities which made one feel pampered such as special bath products one night, however, it does need to be more consistent with its service to maintain its high reputation.
