“Nice hotel let down by penny-pinching”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2012

A decent enough hotel, rather grand in some ways. The lights in my room had a habit of switching themselves on in the middle of the night which was a little disconcerting - either faulty electrics or a ghost - but the room itself was pretty confortable and nicely decorated.

Where the hotel let itself down was in the little things. Like having to pay for wi-fi. Many budget hotels, bars, cafes etc offer free wi-fi so why does the Lalit want guests to pay a rediculous amount for the privilege of using it. Do I have to pay extra for the water I use in a bathroom or the electricity I use in my room? No! So why charge extra for something that is pretty much a basic requirement in a hotel that caters for business visitors? To make matters worse I found that if I bought 1 hour's worth of wi-fi and only used it for 30 minutes, I lost the remaining 30 minutes. In other words I had to use all my allowance up at once. Crazy!

I asked the business-centre to print out a one-page document for me and was charged 50 rupees (plus tax). Hardly reflective of the actual cost to the hotel. Again, in other hotels this sort of service would either be free or provided at a nominal charge.

So while overall the hotel was comfortable and my stay was a pleasant one, the penny-pinching left me feeling rather let down.

The expansive lobby of this hotel is larger and grander than any other hotel I have ever visited. The rooms are nice, but nothing spectacular. This hotel has a fantastic in-house gym, with free weights, including a bench with ample weights.

The breakfast is really good.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors, outside facing, on the opposite corner of the hotel from the check-in desk a...

Previously branded as the Intercontinental, this is one of the old world 5 star hotels that has seen better days. there is nothing per say wrong with the hotel and service but on the other hand there is nothing extraordinary either. one could consider it for a couple of nights stay if you have work near the international airport, especially if price is a consideration as the hotel is priced a shade cheaper than the other international brands close by like the Hyatt, Hilton, Sheraton etc. The food and beverage and extras are definitely very expensive. The breakfast is decent but the quality of fruits served is quite poor. the apples placed on the reception looked very sad and this continued on the breakfast table. There is constuction of a new elevated road going on around the hotel and the access road is in a bad shape. The traffic is a nightmare!

Dear Guest,

At the outset, thank you for sharing your observations about the hotel.

We have noted your observations about the quality of apples at the Reception desk and at the breakfast. The Chef of the hotel has initiated immediate action which will result in availability of good quality of fruits. The Mumbai International airport and its surrounding are undergoing an elaborate expansion which has placed pressure on the density of traffic. Once the work is complete the traffic woes are expected to be eased out.

The team of The Lalit Mumbai would like to continue adding more value and comfort to your future stays and towards this may I request you to feel free to write to me on my email address spandit@thelalit.com with any specific feedback that will help us improve our services and facilities.

Thank you once again.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2012

Hotel is very large and airy. It is kept very clean by an extremely friendly staff. The rooms are large and comfortable. However it is managed with an attitude more consistent with making a profit than making its guests comfortable. Some of the problems include:
1. Ridiculous security check upon entering.
a. They have established a difficult to maneuver, zigzagged, drive in entrance using concrete barriers.
b. Uniformed guards then stop and check the vehicle with mirrors to check below the vehicle and by making you open the front of the car (Hood, Bonnet or cover of engine compartment in standard vehicles), and the back of the car (Trunk, Luggage Compartment or cover in rear of standard vehicles) but do not inspect any bags, boxes or other containers within. They only open up, look, and then close these compartments before they wave you through.
c. They do not inspect any cases or items inside the vehicle where the passengers sit.
d. I am wondering if, by using the mirror, they discovered a package taped to the bottom of your car, would you be asked to open it?
e. Anyone bringing an explosive device to the hotel for a nefarious purpose can simply put it in a cardboard box which is placed on the backseat or in the rear of the car, drive to the front door and set it off.
f. Once you reach the entrance doors of the hotel, about 25 m from the incredible vehicle security, you are then required to take all of your luggage, briefcases, purses and other handheld items and run them through a scanning machine like the ones used at the airport.
g. You are then required to empty your pockets of all items and go through a metal detector.
h. The metal detector is adjusted so that the amount of metal in a ballpoint pen will set it off.
i. At which time you must go through a body scan.
j. Meanwhile, delivery vehicles are unloading boxes of any shape or size, at the back of the hotel, without any box check or security scan.
2. Hotel bar closes at 12 midnight. If holding a late-night business meeting you will be asked to leave the bar. The only place to continue the meeting is in the very large lobby.
3. There are two televisions in the main bar constantly displaying cricket matches at a very loud volume.
4. Smoking is only permitted in the drive in area at the front of the hotel, where all the incredible security scans are taking place. There are no tables or chairs available at in these areas. You'll need to pass through security to reenter the hotel.
5. The hotel has a very large room where they sell cigars but have no place where you can smoke them except as mentioned above. If you are a cigar smoker, as am I, you will be asked to stand in the driveway at the front of the hotel while you smoke your cigar. For you non-cigar smokers a quality cigar takes approximately 45 min. to one hour to smoke satisfactorily.
6. Internet access requires that you log on in your room by giving your room number and last name, as is common in most hotels throughout the world, but then you must assign yourself a login name and password so that you will only be allowed to login on one device at a time.
a. If you use a laptop computer and a PDA, as most of us now do, you will only be allowed to login to one device at a time.
b. If you leave your laptop in your room attached to your company network you will lose the connection as soon as you operate your PDA.
c. After you log you on the second device the computer system will forget your login name and password. So when you go back to your first device you lose complete Internet access to both devices.
d. On a two night stay I had to ask them to reset the login/password three times so I could continue to access the Internet.
e. The maximum logon time for Internet access is 24 hours. If you are staying longer you have to log on every day. But you'll need to have them reset your login name and password as mentioned above.
7. Elevators require that you insert your room card to operate them. While they claim this is for your security the only reason this system is ever used in a hotel is to ensure that you cannot register as a single occupant and then bring a guest to your room. After all the incredible security just to walk through the front doors, and the security people walking around the lobby, and standing near the elevators, who in the hotel are they protecting you from?
8. The rooms use the outdated system of inserting your door access card in a slot to ensure that your lights will come on.
a. This means that if you do leave a computer plugged in it will go to battery as soon as you leave your room.
b. If you're going for several hours the laptop will shut off because of low battery.
c. Also it will turn off your air conditioner so your room is hot when you return.
d. Everyone just bypasses the system by inserting their own plastic card. I use my frequent flyer card.
9. The restaurant adjacent to the main bar offers "imported" steak and purports it to be of very high quality. The sirloin steak was tough and contained a lot of gristle and fat.
a. The steak was not cooked to the medium rare consistency ordered.
b. The fried squid contain a lot of breading and very little squid. It was supposed to be served with a marinara sauce but instead was served with mayonnaise in one dish and ketchup with pepper in another dish.
10. The breakfast buffet is very large and contains a lot of different kinds of food. They have several chefs that will prepare omelettes and other things. It includes coffee or hot tea, but if you order iced tea or Coca-Cola you have to pay for it. I do not like coffee or hot tea so I just drank cold milk. How much money did the hotel save?

Room Tip: All rooms placed the interior lobby. The top floor is reserved for higher price more exclusive guest...

Sudhendu P, General Manager at The Lalit Mumbai, responded to this review, 24 April 2012
Dear Guest,

At the outset, we at The Lalit Mumbai, are grateful for sharing your candid feedback and thank you for the same.
Our procedures for security check have come across as cumbersome and inconvenient. While acknowledging your observations about security procedures, we would like to mention that we are required to adhere to the advice laid down by the local police authorities. Our proximity to the international airport requires us to comply with a few more guidelines of the local authorities. We will work towards revising the security procedures and making them precise and pertinent.

With regard to the use of devices for internet may we bring to your kind attention the written communication placed in every room informing our valued guests that only one device can be used at any given time. With immediate effect we have introduced paid internet access for 1 day, 2 days, 3 days and 1 week which will facilitate uninterrupted usage without the need to log on every day.

Beluga Bar is required to follow the regulations of the Excise department of the State government and accordingly closes at 12 midnight. By end of May 2012, we will introduce a 3 piece band which will enhance the ambience and balance out the cricket heavy atmosphere. Regulations of the Government of India do not allow smoking inside the hotel. But your point about the Cigar shop is valid. With immediate effect, we are keeping access to the poolside area open (poolside is very close to the bar & Cigar shop) with chairs for our guests to lounge and enjoy their cigar or a smoke. This will also mitigate the need to go to the porch / drive in area and re-enter through the lobby.

We are distressed to learn that the food – sirloin steak and squids – at our restaurant did not measure up to your expectations. Kindly let us know when you are in Mumbai next and our Chef will be happy to attend to you and your food preferences personally. As far as breakfast service is concerned, we have briefed the chef and Manager at our Coffee Shop to ensure that Cold coffee & Iced tea are served as a part of the breakfast offerings.

We sincerely hope that you will not hold the experience of the recent past against us and will offer us one more opportunity to provide you with value and great service, which is a hallmark of The Lalit hotels. Please feel free to write to me on my email address spandit@thelalit.com

Thank you once again and we assure you of our best attention at all times.
