I stayed at the Shabana in the 'Managers' room, with my 2 daughters for 1 night in Nov 12. The loo didn't work, dirty/dusty under the bed, no smoke detectors etc. BUT, it was £8.00 a night for 3 of us, so grinned and bared it!
My flight got in at 2am, so it was literally a place to crash for 6hrs, before going to the Taj Palace for my birthday night, (huge contrast!!!)

My daughters and I stayed there until I caught my return flight to the UK in the early hours of 23/11/12. The room had been newly painted as were several others. There was a big whole in the wall with a shared A/C unit (see attached photo) and both rooms had control! Shared toilets/showers were clean and working and staff were friendly and helpful.

Hotel Shabana has central location - in the heart of Colaba, 5 walking minutes form Gateway of India, budget rooms with AC. For a double one we paid 700 Rs. (12 Euro) They have more types of rooms, so check before, as in those with shared AC you practicaly share everything with your neighbour (light, control over AC, or food smell) and you do not know what a neighbour you will get. They have some nicer really private romms, with a window.
The place is difficut to find for the first time. Write down the number and give them a call when you are nearby - best you pass them to your driver, so he could figure out where to stop. Doorway is hidden in shopping street, but on the second floor, it is very silent. Well depending on your neighbours, as there is a tv in each room.
In the hotel they provide food also, but i would take profit form the wonderful central city location, there are many restaurants around (Mc Donallds 2 walking minutes, coffee coffe Day one walking minute, and awesome Mondegar restaurant on the corner just 20 meter away)
All in all i wouldn't go to Bombay because of this hotel, but if you are once there in a need for cheap place to stay, i guess this is one of the BEST BUDGET options in Bombay! It is definitelly better than Salvation Army, and not overbooked.

we were arranged by a crapy travel agency to stay here, when we arrived, there was no water on the toilet, the "window" had a VERY DISGUSTING view to the dump outside, where ONLY trash was there... it was ABSOLUTELY disgusting.... besides that, at the counter, there are usually more that 4 guys, checking every single moove you make, it is NOT a good idea to be there... AT ALL...
