Owner description: Reality Tours and Travel is a responsible tour operator providing fun and authentic experiences around India. We invest 80% of our profits back into the communities we visit through our NGO Reality Gives. We are especially well known for our educational Dharavi Slum Tour that shows visitors the industrial and residential areas of one of Asia’s largest slums, located in the heart of Mumbai. We also offer city, village, multi-day and customized tours and we recently expanded to New Delhi and the Sanjay Colony Slum. Our tours educate visitors about the issues as well as opportunities in slums and hopes to encourage them to understand underprivileged communities better. We use 80% of the tour profits and 100% of merchandise profits to fund our sister-NGO Reality Gives that runs and supports a variety of programs in Dharavi and Sanjay Colony. Our goal is to provide authentic and though-provoking local experiences through our tours and to use the profits to create change in our communities. Our vision is a world where all tourism promotes cross-cultural understanding and local development. Our NGO, Reality Gives, provides young people in the local community with high quality education and experiences to help them maximize their potential. We do this by focusing on English, Computer and Life Skills classes as well as a series of activities and workshop in expressive art and sport. We run these program out of three community centres around Dharavi.

In all honesty: I was highly sceptical of the concept at first. What a mistake - so respectfully done. We did the 'Slum' and 'Street Food' Tours a few times over the years and it's such a rich experience. Go for it!

What a place to visit. Wonderful experience with an amazing guide.
The contrast with life outside the slum is mind blowing.
Example satellite tv dishes ,free wifi but no toilets.
A must do in Mumbai

The Dharvai Slum was far more vibrant and entrepreneurial than I thought. I envisaged an appalling area with a sense of tension in the area but this was not so! There were two areas; the residential and business zones. The latter plays host to in excess of 10,000 businesses. Our tour guide AJ was excellent. We felt safe and he answered our numerous questions. Tip: (1) Ensure that you wear "sensible" shoes because you are taken through numerous very small back alleys and the surface is not smooth. (2) You have to be physically fit because part of the tour involves climbing 2 fairly vertical flights of stairs to get to the top of a building to survey the slum. (3) There is no access to rest rooms within the Slum. However, the guide gave us access to a rest room on the outskirts of the Slum before we entered. Other information: The trip lasted approximately 4 hours. We joined the tour at Churchgate Railway Station where we caught a local train to the slum area. One memorable part of the tour was being taken to a shop where leather goods were sold with the areas very own brand, Dharavi. Thank you for a great tour and great memories!

The Dharavari slum is pulsating with industry and not what we expected. This isn't poverty tourism, but witnessing how a uniquely entrepreneurial community are recycling waste and generating value. The community development work done by Reality Tours means that we left feeling that we have contributed something, whilst also learning a lot.
