Owner description: Reality Tours and Travel is a responsible tour operator providing fun and authentic experiences around India. We invest 80% of our profits back into the communities we visit through our NGO Reality Gives. We are especially well known for our educational Dharavi Slum Tour that shows visitors the industrial and residential areas of one of Asia’s largest slums, located in the heart of Mumbai. We also offer city, village, multi-day and customized tours and we recently expanded to New Delhi and the Sanjay Colony Slum. Our tours educate visitors about the issues as well as opportunities in slums and hopes to encourage them to understand underprivileged communities better. We use 80% of the tour profits and 100% of merchandise profits to fund our sister-NGO Reality Gives that runs and supports a variety of programs in Dharavi and Sanjay Colony. Our goal is to provide authentic and though-provoking local experiences through our tours and to use the profits to create change in our communities. Our vision is a world where all tourism promotes cross-cultural understanding and local development. Our NGO, Reality Gives, provides young people in the local community with high quality education and experiences to help them maximize their potential. We do this by focusing on English, Computer and Life Skills classes as well as a series of activities and workshop in expressive art and sport. We run these program out of three community centres around Dharavi.

Back to France, all our group would like to thank you, as well as all our guides for both visits. We keep incredible memories of these visits. The Banganga Tank was our favorite visit inside the nigth tour, and Dharavi Slum might have been the most remarkable visit of all our stay in India. Please let all our guides know how we have appreciated their accompaniment : enthusiasm, willingness to transmit, deep knowledge of the areas visited and above all the positive impact of Reality Tours & Travel on social issues. Thank you again and warm wishes to Reality Tours & Travel !

Dharavi slums in Mumbai may be toured by the NGO Reality tours, office located within the slums. This walking tour began with some rules; no photos, watch where you walk (there was mud and water after the rainstorm) and be mindful of steep staircases and no handrails. We started off in the industrial area, then moved into the residential area and lastly schools finishing at the tour office to review the available material for purchase. Although 800,000 people live in Dharavi, it is similar to an ant colony with a concentration of multiple businesses that keep 80% or more of the population employed. Businesses include plastic recycling (10,000 tons per annum) of all colors, some from the UK and returned abroad, melting bumpers, ceramic pots and preparing hides. In fact, one small company that provides leather to major international companies for their products, opened their own outlet within Dharavi and I bought one of their wallets. Beautiful soft leather. As you walk by these open air businesses, an artist is shaping a new clay pot in his hands before it is baked in the street centered kiln that must hold 300-500 pots at a time. Streets are narrow, no sewers, pipes all over. Few toilets but no excrement (they use the forest across the main street for that). Western world safety rules have not place here: eye guards are nowhere, facemarks do not appear where grinding is shedding particles into the air and thermal gloves are not found. Protection of the worker does not hold a place in this community, although it should. There is a great sense of community in the narrow walkways among shops and along the streets. Reality tours pours 80% or more of their income back into the community to schooling, computers and other educational pursuits. A terrific organization. A brief tour certainly dispels any notion that this is a poverty stricken area with massive unemployment, quite the opposite. Any visitor from abroad must tour Dharavi to appreciate how hard these people work, for their small wages but do so with pride in their work. Do you appreciate your life, where you work, how standards protect workers? Your perspective will be focussed like never before after visiting Dharavi.

Great thanks to Dharavi community for their sincerity, to our guide Akash for his dedicated work guiding us through this district. Reality Gives is doing such a great job telling the story of Dharavi to the world and helping them to grow. A true eye-opener, this tour is a must.

I did the street food tour which was a great opportunity to understand what we were eating! And to try things you might never have guessed or would know to order! Our guide was super nice. Be very very hungry!!!

I also dis the Dharavi Slum Tour and has an increídible experience walking around and understanding more about it. It's completely safe. Our tour guide was also super nice!!!

I really recommend both tours; fun, well organized and very interesting!!

Plus you help out the communities because they donate a large amount of the profits to their NGO which you get to see first hand!!!!

Rajesh, our guide, was friendly, talkative and very close. He provide us with loads of information and he was always ready to answer any of our questions. This tour gave us the opportunity to meet the reality of the slums and also to know how Reality Gives organization works within this area trying to improve everybody's life quality. Everybody in the slum was nice and the smile is the vistor's card in this area. It's really worth it! It is a great chance to colaborate with such a thrilling project as well.
