I looked online for a tour company involved in NGO work within the community itself, because of the ethical issues associated with poverty / slum tourism. Reality Tours were great. Efficient, informative, friendly and ethical. The tour was really very positive, focusing on the complex and impressive ways that Dharavi works as a highly productive, thriving and diverse part of Mumbai. Our guide Ajay was knowledgeable, well received by locals within the community, approachable and respectful of the residents and workers. The company's sister NGO Reality Gives works hard within Dharavi to give back 80% of its profits, and their hard work has repeatedly been recognised locally and internationally by a range of awards and in Lonely Planet. Can't recommend them enough.

My husband and I spent about 2 1/2 hours this week touring the Oklah Slum of Delhi where about 45,000 residents live. Our guide, Vijay, grew up and proudly still lives in the slum. His explanations of daily life in the slum were both educational and touching as he gave us a perspective on their simple lives we would not have otherwise understood. The slum community is vibrant, self sufficient, and very active. Both men and women work in nearby textile factories and support their families with their wages. There is a school within the slum which children attend, a Buddhist temple, a full time physician .(who also grew up and still lives in the slum), and a wholesale market where textile merchandise is sold for profit. With proceeds from the tour, Reality Tours provides a variety of educational services to the slum residents including computer instruction and life skills training to both children and adults.

Vijay was a wondeful guide, eager to answer questions and provide us with a energetic perspective of the vibrant community. We highly recommend his services and the tour to anyone interested in understanding more about this active community and how simple people have created vital and productive lives amidst the challenges of limited means. This was an A+ tour!

If you want to experience the real incredible india, you should visit the dharavi slum of mumbai. An unforgettable tour with competent guides in very small groups. The revenues goes directly into social projects in Dharavi. A respectful and sustainable tour to great people, you do not forget so quickly. Highly recommended.

We were a bit affraid going to the '' zoo ''
but the tour is well organized by a guide and driver from the slum.
Interesting visit and very good explanations
Interesting to discover the organization and economy of the slum
Photos are not allowed and 5 people maximum for the visit
Very safe and no aggressivity
