Owner description: Reality Tours and Travel is a responsible tour operator providing fun and authentic experiences around India. We invest 80% of our profits back into the communities we visit through our NGO Reality Gives. We are especially well known for our educational Dharavi Slum Tour that shows visitors the industrial and residential areas of one of Asia’s largest slums, located in the heart of Mumbai. We also offer city, village, multi-day and customized tours and we recently expanded to New Delhi and the Sanjay Colony Slum. Our tours educate visitors about the issues as well as opportunities in slums and hopes to encourage them to understand underprivileged communities better. We use 80% of the tour profits and 100% of merchandise profits to fund our sister-NGO Reality Gives that runs and supports a variety of programs in Dharavi and Sanjay Colony. Our goal is to provide authentic and though-provoking local experiences through our tours and to use the profits to create change in our communities. Our vision is a world where all tourism promotes cross-cultural understanding and local development. Our NGO, Reality Gives, provides young people in the local community with high quality education and experiences to help them maximize their potential. We do this by focusing on English, Computer and Life Skills classes as well as a series of activities and workshop in expressive art and sport. We run these program out of three community centres around Dharavi.

I'd highly recommend booking with Reality Tours. For starters, you can book online so you need not worry about using cash. I booked two tours on one day- Dharavi Slum with Lunch and Markets and Temple. Absolutely loved both tours! I asked a lot of questions and my guide Bipin throughly answered all of them.

I love seeing how local residents live and staying out of tourist areas so both tours were perfect for me. I also got to ride the train between tours (ladies only car), which was a lot of fun. Please don't hesitate to book with Reality Tours even during this perceived "cash crisis." You can easily enjoy your holiday in Mumbai!

9 of us booked the early-morning bike tour (6.15 a.m.). It was a gentle cycle around the Colaba area taking in some of the easier, more obvious landmarks, (Victoria Station, Gateway to India etc.), but also market areas and a temple that would be more difficult to find and visit alone. The two guides spoke excellent English and were very informative. We finished with a smashing dosa breakfast which is included in the price.
Keen photographers in the group were a little disappointed by the ban on photography in certain places, particularly the fish-market which was by far the most photogenic site in Mumbai. This appears to be official, and certainly not the fault of Reality, but I for one would be happy to pay for a "licence" to take photographs in the fish-market, if the funds were passed on to the workers there, (providing of course that the workers were happy with this arrangement).

Reflecting on our 3 week tour in 7 cities in India, Reality Tours and Travel Day Dharavi Tour was one of our most memorable experiences!!

India is a country of contrasts- a land of slums and palaces. To get a true picture and an eye opening education, DO NOT MISS this tour! The tour was extremely professional and the company is well known in Mumbai. In fact, the concierge in our very fancy hotel, The Oberoi, told us he often books this company for his guests. I had gotten the name from TA and even our guide, Bilaji, from recommendations on Trip Adsvisor. It was good to know that our hotel also highly recommends this company and also knows Bilaji well and recommends him.

Reality Tours will not disappoint you, and here is why:

* This tour is extensive and authentic! You will be guided by a local.
* Reliable and knowledgeable tour guides! Our tour guide, Bilaji, grew up in the neighborhood in which he took us.
* Tour done "with dignity", everyone we saw within the confines of the "slum" neighborhood, was working. We saw a variety of work- from the recycling of plastics to the crafts of handmade leather goods.
* All the sites were covered- from the incredible laundry to the lunch box system- unique to the world! We were able to see the life of the people in Mumbai through the eyes of a native.
* Tour included the famous train station with its interesting facts as well as the people's market with its variety of goods.
* The full day tour will give you a thorough overview of everyday life in Mumbai, as you travel through many different neighborhoods.
* The tour is well laid out, with both a driver and a guide.
* Reality Tours and Travel Day Tours is very reasonably priced. Money goes back to help the community, so not only does the tourist benefit, but the charity from the company benefits the needy as well.

This tour of Dharavi, as well as other areas of Mumbai on the way, was one of the highlights of our trip- a fabulous and unusual experience, not to be missed!!

If you've never been to Dharavi before or have never done a guided walk of the area, this is something you have to try. Dharavi is nothing like its portrayed to be through images, it is much more cultural, vibrant, resilient and diverse - and innovative. It changes your perception of Dharavi.

+) Organized good tour included qualified guide. They give a very nice and interesting introduction through the Dharavi slums in Mumbai. Recommended!

+/-) You're not allowed to make pictures, but that's understandable.
