Owner description: Reality Tours and Travel is a responsible tour operator providing fun and authentic experiences around India. We invest 80% of our profits back into the communities we visit through our NGO Reality Gives. We are especially well known for our educational Dharavi Slum Tour that shows visitors the industrial and residential areas of one of Asia’s largest slums, located in the heart of Mumbai. We also offer city, village, multi-day and customized tours and we recently expanded to New Delhi and the Sanjay Colony Slum. Our tours educate visitors about the issues as well as opportunities in slums and hopes to encourage them to understand underprivileged communities better. We use 80% of the tour profits and 100% of merchandise profits to fund our sister-NGO Reality Gives that runs and supports a variety of programs in Dharavi and Sanjay Colony. Our goal is to provide authentic and though-provoking local experiences through our tours and to use the profits to create change in our communities. Our vision is a world where all tourism promotes cross-cultural understanding and local development. Our NGO, Reality Gives, provides young people in the local community with high quality education and experiences to help them maximize their potential. We do this by focusing on English, Computer and Life Skills classes as well as a series of activities and workshop in expressive art and sport. We run these program out of three community centres around Dharavi.

Do yourself a favor and go off the tourist sites and see the Dharavi slums with this your operator. No only will you see the human side of this city but how this organization gives back to it. Highly recommend...very personable.

Very interesting explanations from our guide about the meaning and development of the unauthorized land occupation called slum. Plastic recycling, leather production, pottery, batik, machine building, paper recycling, papadam making and other small industries visited. The process of developing the slum area and resettlement with building companies investments. After doing the full tour we received a link for higher quality photo's we could download. During the tour no photo's were allowed.
Beforehand we received good instructions what to do and what not.

We did three tours with Reality Tours & Travel in Mumbai. Started off with the Dharavi Slum Tour with Suraj. Confronting yes, but the opportunity to see a part of Mumbai that many westerners stay away from is not to be missed. Before you go, look at Kevin McLeod's 2 part doco from 2010 titled "Slumming It". My husband a keen bike rider did the Mumbai Bicycle Tour, again with Suraj. He loved it. His advice: "If your bike skills are shaky then maybe keep to 4 wheels. But hey, most people can ride a bike, so this is a rare chance to ride in a megacity. Also a chance to get to some of the markets nice and early". Our third tour was with Charm (his nickname) - a personalised car tour for myself to look at childhood haunts including the cow shelter, Malabar Hill, Mani Bhavan. Car tours are a great way to start if you have never been to Mumbai: good for bearings and to get a handle on this marvellous city.

Went on the tour around dharavi (slums), absolute eye opener, the tour guides tend to be from this area so know a lot, questions ate welcomed. If I had time I would've done more of their tours. Amazing company.

I took two Reality Tours: the Slum Tour and the Street Food Tour. For both tours, the guide was late to the meeting point, which is why I can't give an excellent rating. However, after this rocky start, both tours were very informative and enjoyable. I found the slum tour somewhat crowded; at times there appeared to be more tourists than slum dwellers. For the Street Food Tour, we were a small group of 5, rather than several groups of about 10, making it easier to get around. The very nature of this tour was more upbeat, of course. Reality Tours is doing important work and deserve your support!

Hi and thanks for taking the time to leave us a review! I'm really disappointed to hear that your guides were late. This is entirely unacceptable and I will look into it immediately. We also try to keep our groups in Dharavi to 6-7 as you're right, this is more manageable and respectful. However, the period between Christmas and New Years is our busiest time of the year and we face a lot of demand. We're currently looking into how to best deal with this and I appreciate the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the tours and thanks again for your support!
