Owner description: Reality Tours and Travel is a responsible tour operator providing fun and authentic experiences around India. We invest 80% of our profits back into the communities we visit through our NGO Reality Gives. We are especially well known for our educational Dharavi Slum Tour that shows visitors the industrial and residential areas of one of Asia’s largest slums, located in the heart of Mumbai. We also offer city, village, multi-day and customized tours and we recently expanded to New Delhi and the Sanjay Colony Slum. Our tours educate visitors about the issues as well as opportunities in slums and hopes to encourage them to understand underprivileged communities better. We use 80% of the tour profits and 100% of merchandise profits to fund our sister-NGO Reality Gives that runs and supports a variety of programs in Dharavi and Sanjay Colony. Our goal is to provide authentic and though-provoking local experiences through our tours and to use the profits to create change in our communities. Our vision is a world where all tourism promotes cross-cultural understanding and local development. Our NGO, Reality Gives, provides young people in the local community with high quality education and experiences to help them maximize their potential. We do this by focusing on English, Computer and Life Skills classes as well as a series of activities and workshop in expressive art and sport. We run these program out of three community centres around Dharavi.

Our guide, Krishna, was one of the best tour guides that we've had on any tour. The description on the webpage is exactly what was provided, but what does not come through on the page is genuine feeling of compassion and knowledge Krishna had for the people of the villages. As we walked through the village, he seemed to know everyone, and even had some chocolates with him, making both children and adults smile big smiles. Overall, tour was eye opening, providing a glimpse into the lives of people who live on very little. It was interesting to see all of the children singing in the courtyard during our visit to the school, and the brick making families were hard working for little money. The food at the villager's home was surprisingly tasty. Just be ready for quite a bus ride to get to where the tour starts! We look forward to going back on another personalized tour, and will definitely select Reality Tours when we come back to India.

Thank Travis C

So glad you enjoyed your time in the village! Will be sure to pass along all your kind words to Krishna, who considers that village a second home. Hope to welcome you back in Mumbai soon!

Just finished my street food tour with Neelish (sp) and his brother Kalpesh. Neelish was the tour guide and Kalpesh joined as a secondary to help with the two taxi situation (splitting of the group into two taxis to make sure that the tourists are not left alone in a cab). Neelish was very friendly and explained all the food we tried. He was attentive and always made sure we had what we wanted / needed. The tour was well organized - from the meeting of Neelish to arranging the cab ride between places and to the explaining of the food. The food choices were great and I finished the tour with a very happy stomach. I wouldn't have tried all that food on my own (although it would have been much cheaper).

We took the tour and it is certainly a must see in Mumbai. It is very safe and the guides are really competent. It is shocking to see what a slum is like from the inside, but it is a great experience. Reality tours facilitates it for tourists and it makes us feel safe. I would not encourage anyone to get into the slum alone. Definitely contact them.

We did a Dharavi Tour (Slum Tour) with Reality Tours and Travel.

This is not the typical tourist thing to do in Mumbai. But it is a must-see, because it is also a part of the life in the city.

Reality Tours and Travel do a great tour. We were picked-up on our hotel and on the way Dharavi our excellent guide told us about the life in Mumbai. His English skills were good and he could answer all our questions.

The Dharavi is an interesting place – and after the tour you do not feel sorry for the “poor people”. It seems like they are living a fine life. Of course it is not like ours – but it could be worse.

Reality Tours and Travel are also doing a lot for the Dharavi community. Actually after paying there expenses they are giving 80 % back to the community.

That is a good thing – and when the guide and tour also is great it is highly recommendable.

Thank Morten-Elm

The most important thing I realised after having done a tour with Reality Tours & Travel in Dharavi is that (even unconsciously) I had cliché ideas on what a slum is.
Thanks to a very nice and interesting guide, taking us to all the industries, homes and activities happening in the slum, we realized there is a lot happening in there and we shouldn't stigmatize them as we usually do.
It was an amazing eye-opener, priceless.
On top of it, Reality gives seems to be an amazing NGO, giving back to the community and well-respected in the area : that we could see on people's faces.
