Owner description: Reality Tours and Travel is a responsible tour operator providing fun and authentic experiences around India. We invest 80% of our profits back into the communities we visit through our NGO Reality Gives. We are especially well known for our educational Dharavi Slum Tour that shows visitors the industrial and residential areas of one of Asia’s largest slums, located in the heart of Mumbai. We also offer city, village, multi-day and customized tours and we recently expanded to New Delhi and the Sanjay Colony Slum. Our tours educate visitors about the issues as well as opportunities in slums and hopes to encourage them to understand underprivileged communities better. We use 80% of the tour profits and 100% of merchandise profits to fund our sister-NGO Reality Gives that runs and supports a variety of programs in Dharavi and Sanjay Colony. Our goal is to provide authentic and though-provoking local experiences through our tours and to use the profits to create change in our communities. Our vision is a world where all tourism promotes cross-cultural understanding and local development. Our NGO, Reality Gives, provides young people in the local community with high quality education and experiences to help them maximize their potential. We do this by focusing on English, Computer and Life Skills classes as well as a series of activities and workshop in expressive art and sport. We run these program out of three community centres around Dharavi.

I had arrived in Mumbai less than 24 hours before going on this tour, and I couldn't have felt more at ease. It was a very accesible way to see a number of wonderful sites in a short period of time. Our guide was incredible, he was eager to please and very charming. I would advise this to anyone who passes through (or is living in) Mumbai!

We are very grateful for having been told about this tour as it was excellent. If you wish to know about the realities of the folk living in the slums, as these people constitute 65% of the city's population, then this is a must for you. As integral to any other sight seeing in Mumbai but also demystifies the stigma around the slum populations where there are also many professionals living. Thank you Reality Tours, you are doing the community a great service as well as giving back to them in the form of educational opportunities for children and you elderly citizens programmes.

The tour itself is fantastic idea. It opens your eyes so you are able how people live and work in slums..Also the fact that all money which we pay ( 7 pounds for slums tour) is donated to the local comunity centre.
Didnt like the fact, that taking pictures is not allowed...!!!!!! Such a punishment for photographers and not only!!! You should allowed taking pictures, if not everywhere than at least in certain places!!!!!

Thanks for the kind review! I'm sorry you were disappointed by our no-photography policy, but we feel it's helps us conduct the tours in the most respectful and responsible way possible and have received feedback from the residents that they greatly appreciate this.

I was a little worried that this tour would be overtly voyeuristic, however it was simply fascinating. The young guide skilfully and carefully wove us through, stopping to explain things with a great deal of understanding and knowledge. I don't think I'll ever forget what we saw, however I don't think that the tour was in any way exploitative. Do I feel that I was a rich westerner looking at a different aspect to life? Of course, but the tour changed me a little too.

This tour raises money for local children's education and we were happy to give a donation too.
