Owner description: Reality Tours and Travel is a responsible tour operator providing fun and authentic experiences around India. We invest 80% of our profits back into the communities we visit through our NGO Reality Gives. We are especially well known for our educational Dharavi Slum Tour that shows visitors the industrial and residential areas of one of Asia’s largest slums, located in the heart of Mumbai. We also offer city, village, multi-day and customized tours and we recently expanded to New Delhi and the Sanjay Colony Slum. Our tours educate visitors about the issues as well as opportunities in slums and hopes to encourage them to understand underprivileged communities better. We use 80% of the tour profits and 100% of merchandise profits to fund our sister-NGO Reality Gives that runs and supports a variety of programs in Dharavi and Sanjay Colony. Our goal is to provide authentic and though-provoking local experiences through our tours and to use the profits to create change in our communities. Our vision is a world where all tourism promotes cross-cultural understanding and local development. Our NGO, Reality Gives, provides young people in the local community with high quality education and experiences to help them maximize their potential. We do this by focusing on English, Computer and Life Skills classes as well as a series of activities and workshop in expressive art and sport. We run these program out of three community centres around Dharavi.

First of all we had to find the office to book the tour - which seemed like almost the hardest part. Everyone in the neighbourhood tried to convince us that THEIR place was in fact Reality tours. The office was in the most unlikely place, tucked away in the attic behind a tiny kiosk. But we found it, and we were glad we were that persistant! Out in the slum we were not allowed to take pictures, which was hard, but absolutely understandable. We were spilt into groups of about 8 and taken around to see different aspects of the recycling and clothing industry and the conditions that people work under there. We went through the tiny alleys and saw typical dharavi housing, schools and other stuff. All of this under the guidance of a knowledgable young guy, with great english and lots of patience. Not once when we were there did we feel unsafe or get approached by beggars.

This trip was the best part of my time in Mumbai, a large chaotic city but the tour was relatively quiet and relaxed. It was amazing to see all of the industrious work going on especially the recycling. As interesting was the residential part of the tour. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants a fuller picture of Mumbai. Disappointing not to be able to take pictures but they came through and provided some to us after the tour.

Reality tours provides an amazing, thoughtful and very respectful tour of the slums of Dharavi. The tour is at times heart-wrenching, at other times mind-blowing. You'll see the incredibly busy and industrious life of the slums with knowledgeable operators (many of whom still live in these slums).

The tour covers the industrial and residential part of the slums. You will break into groups of 4-6. The tour lasts approximately 3 hours from the time you leave the train platform in Mumbai until you return.

Do not miss this tour. It will change the way you think about the world. No photos are allowed out of respect for the residents. Some of the sights and smells are overwhelming.

I visited Dharavi with Reality Tours as part of a research project on the Indian fashion industry. I was picked up from my hotel by the guide and taken to Dharavi. The guide was very well informed and accommodating in my particular interest in the fashion and textile related business in Dharavi. The organization behind the tour seems very well organized and I was satisfied with the tour. It would not have been able to get the same insight had I gone there on my own.

We had a very good guide around the Dharavi rea. Amazing amount of industry and positivity coming from the people living in such harsh conditions. A learning experience.
