“good budget option”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

We stayed here in December and we knew that this is a budget hotel with shared bathrooms. The bathrooms were quite clean, the towels we were given were probably the way you can expect them for this hotel. The room was quite small and we had one facing the street ... which means it was very very loud. However, it's probably loud everywhere in Mumbai ;-) THe breakfast offered (omlette) was not that good ;-)
Recommendable budget option for a backpacker!!

Room Tip: try to get a room that is not facing the main street

Clean, pleasant, and not too noisy (for India) (double Rs 1540 plus tax). Our room did not have a private bath – used a common bath down the hall, which worked OK. An OK room service breakfast is included in the price. Excellent location (in Fort area), within easy walking distance of Victoria Terminus (or CST, to use its current correct name). Most of the other sites in Fort and Colaba (including Gateway to India) can also be reasonably reached on foot. Unfortunately, in a visit in February 2011, they managed to completely mess up our reservations (despite several contacts before we arrived – only place in India where this occurred – though there was a partial error at Amritsar). We ended up being accommodated, though not as reserved or as we wished. We decided that this was an honest error, and tried again in February 2012. No problems this time, despite a fairly late arrival at CST. Reasonably good Punjabi dhaba across the street on the corner.

Spotlessly clean and well located, you can't beat the Welcome. It's across the street from the GPO and a five minute walk from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus/Victoria Terminus. Within a couple of blocks are several respectable restaurants, and if you're a good walker, the Gateway to India and Taj Hotel are 15 - 20 minutes away. The hotel itself is on the upper floors with reception on the second. Rates seem comparable with other hotels nearby, but it's oh-so-clean that even if you want to economize by taking a room with a shared bath down the hall, you won't feel creepy about the sanitation! And my room has always been quiet, based on 3 stays. Good Indian breakfast served in your room is included. And afternoon tea!

We chose this hotel based on the very good lonely planet review but, whilst we usually agree with their recommendations, they've got this one completely wrong.

Firstly the price was far too high. This hotel was 1750 rs per room without ac, a decent window or a bathroom. Although our budget was half of this which had never been a problem elsewhere in India, we initially overlooked it, as the lonley planet review suggested that it was clean and that prices in Mumbai were massively high compared to elsewhere. However, the room smelt musty and of sweat, it was seriously muggy, hotter inside than out (saying something given that it was 38 degrees outside).

On top of this, the ladies bathroom was not cleaned once in my 3 night stay. I could tell this as i left a soap and loo roll wrapper in there when I first arrived as there was no bin, and they were still there 3 days later when I checked out. Loo roll was not provided, the toilet was visibly unclean and there wasn't any hot water for the entire of my stay.

To make matters worse, the staff were very unprofessional. There seemed to be an awful lot of them (3 per corridor) and they loitered outside our room, staring when we left which made us feel very uncomfortable. They slept on the floors in the corridors and when we returned to our hotel at 10.30pm after a meal out, we had to step over three of them sprawled on the staircase, who made no attempt to move to let us by. They would knock and then walk straight into the room, if we ordered coffee for example, then wouldn't leave, making it very clear they were waiting for a tip (one even asked for one). Whilst we are never hesitant to tip when we receive decent service, we were reluctant to do so when the staff are merely doing their jobs (and poorly at that).

On top of this, even basic cleaning tasks were left incomplete by the staff. Whilst they were loitering at the end of corridors, there were numerous dirty pots of tea and coffee and cups lining the corridors outside the rooms.

Whilst the hotel does not serve an evening meal, the staff still eat plates of food. These dirty plates are then left in the middle of the corridor outside the bathroom for no apparent reason. I tripped over one of these when I went to brush my teeth at 10 pm and was absolutely horrified to find that in the morning at 7am, these plates were still there and that they had doubled in number since the night before.

I would seriously suggest that you do not use this hotel in Mumbai, there are plenty better, cheaper options. In fact a travelodge in Britain would be cheaper than this and would be a million times cleaner and more professional.

The good: It's perfectly located just by the CST (train station) and if you can live with sharing the bathrooms, it's pretty cheap, being in Mumbai. The room I stayed in was clean and I actually had no problems at all during my 3 nights stay. The wifi was good, thought it's 150 rupees extra a day.

The bad: you get what you pay for, which means windowless moisty room, cheap, small breakfast, shared (occupied) bathrooms and as it seemed, unhappy staff.

The service was anything but friendly, but if you want smiles and extraordinary services included you probably want to stay somewhere else.
