“Don't bother - unfriendly and nothing to see”
Reviewed 15 March 2012

The site itself is boring - it's just a large open space with a small prayer area on the side. There is nothing about this mosque that is worth seeing except that it's a large open space and has been around for a long time.

To make matters worse, whereas you would expect a religious site to be welcoming, it was the complete opposite at Jama Masjid. Officially, admission is supposed to be free and you need to pay 200 INR if you want to use a camera. In reality, however, if you are not Indian or are not traveling with a large tour group, they will try to charge you 200 INR per person regardless of whether or not you have a camera. They will also deny that this fee is for a camera, and will claim that the "rules recently changed" and that everyone has to pay 200 INR to enter, which is obviously a lie.

They also purposely waste your time - if you first try to enter through gate 1 and refuse to pay, they will tell you to go to gate 2. They when you go to gate 2, they will tell you to go to gate 3, and so on.

I'd recommend skipping this site, there is nothing worthwhile to see.

if you want to visit this place be sure to be properly dressed (they have gowns too which you can wear provided free of cost) taking a camera inside is chargable per camera better to take one in hand if you want to use and other put in bag and say no when asked about other camera (staff is not educated so this is the way i think they understand) if dont want to spend extra bucks for carrying a camera which you might not use!

“Architectural Showcase”
Reviewed 24 February 2012

The Masjid-i Jahan-Numa, commonly known as the Jama Masjid is the principal mosque of Old Delhi in India. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, builder of the Taj Mahal,in the year 1644 CE and completed in the year 1658 AD, it is the largest and best-known mosque in India. It lies at the origin of a very busy central street of Old Delhi, the Chawri Bazar Road.
The later name, Jama Masjid, is a reference to the weekly Friday noon congregation prayers of Muslims, Jummah, which are usually done at a mosque. The courtyard of the mosque can hold up to twenty-five thousand worshippers. The mosque also houses several relics in a closet in the north gate, including an antique copy of the Qur'an written on deer skin.
