Staff excellent in this restaurant/cafe in the Claridges hotel. Food good and great variety. Staff attentive and will get more bread or make something special for you if you request it.

Staying in Claridges, I try not to eat here. The hotel has much better places and, of course, there is the culinary richness of the city. But, for breakfast, they hold guests captive.

There was a time — it is useful to remember — when these breakfasts were good and up to the high standards of the hotel. Those days, alas, seem long past. Admittedly, the dining room is small and cramped (an unavoidable problem shared by all the hotel’s restaurants). But when a large staff that flutters about doing apparently nothing is added, the scene becomes one of chaos. Food is merely theoretical with only labels hinting at its presence, depleted bowls are never refilled, tables are never cleared except when you are still eating, and obtaining basics such as coffee/tea, implements or butter seems to require a major expedition.

Circuses are supposed to be fun but this one is not. Much work is needed.

The high point of thire lunch buffet is an excellent choice of designer salads - each different, and (while cosmopolitan) likely to appeal to an Indian palette.

Apart from that, some of the Western entrees were also pretty good and the Indian offerings spicy and tasty.

The peppery mutton shorba was excellent and among the variety of desserts, a few were very good..

One downer was that the choice of music didn't fit the attempt to position the restaurant as a place for sophisticated dining. Something classical would have been far more appropriate for a restaurant aiming to set itself apart from the crowd.

Sometimes no music is better than bad music!

Located just inside the entrance to The Claridges, Pickwicks is a very nice place to start your day. With a good selection of cereals, fruits and baked goods, you are sure to find something to “fill the void”. There is also a wonderful selection of local cuisine to get you started on your “voyage of discovery” of ethnic food. And if that which is immediately available is not quite to your liking, the staff will prepare a fried egg or Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon, if you’d like. Prices are a bit steep, but then you’d expect that in any hotel of this caliber. The restaurant does fill up quite quickly, so I recommend getting to breakfast early... avoid the rush and get a head start on your adventures in New Delhi.

Sadly this place is not what it was. We came for lunch - just wanted something light but there was nothing reasonable except soup. Talk about light! The leek and chicken soup was hot water with homeopathic sprinkling of tiny bits of leek and a cocktail stick with a tiny blob of reconstituted chicken sitting in the middle! We had to ask twice for bread, and this consisted of two tiny pieces of soggy toast. We were asked about drinks and the waiter said was 'just still water' fine. Yes we said, since we assumed it was complimentary, like other places, turned out to cost £4 (discovered only with the bill). So nearly £20 for two bowls of flavoured water, a couple of glasses of water, and soggy toast! And surly, slow service. No doubt they have put on their compulsory service charge because they would have no chance of a tip. M

AVOID!
