Last month we returned to the Sharon Inn after 17 years. We'd had a great time then, met loads of people and loved the curries. This time we were travelling with 3 friends. I was able to book 3 rooms for us by e.mail for a good rate. (Rate was the most reasonable we found in the 4 weeks we were touring Sri Lanka). We also received athe most wonderful welcome, we almost felt like family!! Tea and coffee provided while we waited for our rooms, guitar and singing and staff very earnest to make us feel comfortable. The hotel had expanded over the years and the rooms were much better than I'd remembered with balcony overlooking the city. The curry buffet was also better than I'd remembered if that is possible. All in all a wonderful experience! We hope to return one day!

The Sharon Inn has high reviews for good reason. Don't be put off by the drive up a very narrow (and at points steep road to the hotel).

Positives:
Make sure you have dinner here at least once. The buffet is great and well priced. Room was clean, clearly well looked after and very comfortable with a/c, TV, wifi in the room. Large bathroom, great balcony with spectacular view.
Hotel organised a great Tuktuk driver who took us around Kandy for the day. He was very helpful, informative, punctual and not too pushy. The hotel also organised a fantastic driver for the next 3 days after our visit, which made things much easier. It was a reasonable cost (after we bargained a little).
The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much to ask. They made us feel very welcome and we throughly enjoyed our stay.

Not so positives:
The bed was not a double, rather twins pushed together. Long way from Kandy proper - you will need a Tuktuk to get to central Kandy.

Room Tip: Get a room at the front of the hotel so you can enjoy the views.

Sue and Faez run a great b+b type guest house up the hill from the Kandy lake. The building features airy rooms over six floors with an eccentric staircase and no lift so those with mobility impairments will have difficulty. It is very good training if you plan on climbing Sigiriya however.
Dinner on the seventh floor ( the buffet comes up in baskets from the kitchen below) is very good. It's reputation brings in many from surrounding accommodations. The cuisine is slightly de-chillied for the tourist palate but no other concessions are made. Definitely Sri Lankan rather than "international" cuisine.
Our hosts were, despite all our provocations, genuinely warm and welcoming. Sue's fine laundry service is worth the investment. Only the curmudgeonly would object to Faez' occasional serenades!
Remember, you are a guest in their home. So bear with a little delay in some aspects of administrivia, or give a few hours warning and get the admin done in advance. The rewards include clean, safe, light rooms with views, good bathrooms, excellent wifi and hosts to remember.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views

you have a very nice view over Kandy city, especially from the rooms in the upper floors, very good sri lanka dinner at the roof toü restaurant, the rooms are clean and comfortable. The friendly owner sometimes is picking his guitar and playing some songs.

We had a family room which was spacious, very clean and with good beds and bathrooms.

We would have had a very comfortable 4-night-stay in the guesthouse if the manager would not be that rude and unfriendly.
There were daily disputes between the owner couple. Futhermore, the tone against the staff was very rude. As a guest, I expect another behavior of the owner or at least I do not want to be witness of such scenes.
There is an employee working day and night and does everything for the guest. But when we checked out, the owner started to complain about him that he was not efficient, that he does not work the way the owner would, etc.
I felt very uncomfortable in this situation and such a behavior says a lot about the management which is also reflected in the communication with the customers which is described in foregoing reviews.

We had once the buffet dinner. For us, it was far too busy (too many customers are accepted to maximize the revenue).
There are other excellent restaurants in 3 minutes walking distance (e.g. Mango Guesthouse just down the street) which are a much better option.

For a next visit of Kandy I would stay in another place.
