This hotel is certainly unique- our stay was a mixed bag though. Plus points- the decor is bohemian and eclectic and will suit creative types. There is a lot to look at and you can spend hours looking around, lovely music always playing and is very atmospheric. The dinner is good with different selections each night. Down sides...mainly the staff unfortunately. There was always a feeling that they were always wanting to close up and go to bed. Mid evening( about 10pm, they start turning lights off, blowing out the candles, closing the bar area and generally hovering making us feel like we had no other choice but to go to bed). yes we did come slightly out of season so the hotel was quiet, however this should not affect how guests are treated. We felt as paying guests there should have been more hospitality; although staff are pleasant they are not too friendly and not talkative at all. Also at dinner time, they spread the dining guests in different rooms when we felt that by putting people eating in the same room they would manage to create more of an atmosphere. The other down side is that the hotel, although wonderfully decorated, is extremely shabby. It is in need of a BIG clean...it is dusty and had a slight dank/musty smell..many things are almost threadbare and this is a shame because by updating a few elements such as the bathrooms, the curtains and upholstery, the place could be amazing. I do not wish to put anyone off from visiting here as it is truly unique, however just be aware of coming out of season.

Dear Madam/ Sir.
Thank you for staying with us, and thank you too for all your helpful and constructive criticism which will be looked into. Thank you.
Guests chose where they like to sit, and some book ahead.
Waiters like putting guests together, as it makes life easier for them, however as I have written, some guests want solitude, and some like the decor etc of a certain dining room, come early and book!
Yes, the antique tapestry upholstery and curtains are showing their age, but we keep them, as they are valuable in their own right.
Yes, the house is dusty, one of the reasons is that we have on going builders, however that is no excuse!Thank you.
Glad that you liked the food and other aspects of 'our' home.
All the very best.
Safe travels, from all the Folly family.

Helga's Folly was amazing. You have to see it to believe it. It was truly delightful. The staff was warm and welcoming. The dinner was delicious and served by candlelight in the most unique dining room(s) I've ever seen. Be warned though, the rooms have seen better days. Pretty shabby, outlet didn't work, phone was dead, uncomfortable bed and pillows, dingy bedding and towels. For the price, you could definitely get a much nicer room in Kandy. BUT I'd still chose Helga's though. The AC worked quite well. It was raining the next morning so didn't use the pool. It's a short tuk tuk ride to town which you can find at the end of the private drive way. Unlike Colombo, the tuk Tuks didn't have meters so cost about 200 tourist price. You could prob walk down the hill in 20 min if you turn right, but traffic is way too scary for me to walk along the roadside.

So VERY sorry to hear about all the things that were wrong.
Did you complain to anyone AT THE TIME?
If so was nothing done?
Help us enormously if you could graciously let us know when you came, and which room you had.
I am at the desk everyday, and I am so sorry that you made no complaint to me at the time, when something could have been done.
So VERY sorry.
THANK YOU in spite of all shortcomings that you would chose to stay with us again.
Wishing you all the very best, from all the Folly family.

Places like this don't come alone often. An absolute MUST see for creatives, dreamers, wanderers, anyone with a sense of adventure.
The Hotel is a home, it is rustic, eccentric, with glamour and nostalgia cooked up on a hilltop in Kandy.
If not for the scenery, if not for the wall doodles, if not for dinner ,Go for curiosity, it served Alice well.

Oh, are there words? I had the most incredible stay at Helga's Folly. In the lush mountains of Kandy, Sri Lanka, I sipped whisky among fireflies and new international friends, I swam in a dreamy pool with a whimsical statue and a monkey lifeguard, I ate a delicious candlelit dinner and scrumptious Sri Lankan breakfast in a dining hall of color and creativity, I wandered halls straight out of fairy tales, I read the history on the walls and in books in rapt delight, I listened to Frank Sinatra sing while the chants of a nearby buddist gathering wafted through the hills. Enchanted and beyond. Thank you Helga and her sweet team, talented chefs and inspiring home.

When we stumbled across the Helga's Folly website we knew it was the place we had to stay in our one night in Kandy, and it certainly didn't disappoint!

Part hotel, part museum, Helga's Folly is a magical place like nothing we have ever seen before. Each room is unique with walls lined with murals and an enchanting collection of curiosities displayed throughout. My favourite room was the 'Alice in Wonderland' inspired dining room in red with checkered floors.

Each hotel room is individually decorated, ours was ornate and Indian inspired with a 4 poster bed and dramatic eye paintings on the walls watching over us as we slept.

Staff were friendly and attentive and breakfast was fresh and delicious. We went for the Sri Lankan option served with home grown coffee.

Probably the highlight of our stay was getting to speak to Helga herself on the phone as we checked out. She was full of interesting stories, talking me though the artwork and history of the hotel. She's an incredibly fascinating person and the hotel is a true extension of her personality and creativity.

If you want a real life Wes Anderson experience then this is the place to stay.

I have already recommended Helga's to friends and family and definitely plan to come back again!
